She is the rishi Shandilya's daughter, and one of the few women allowed to ascend to heaven, purely based on her merit, even without marriage. During the war of Kurukshetra, Balarama visits the site of her penance, at the base of a mountain of the Himalayas near the battlefield, and pays his respects.
