Shadow
The monster looked through the fridge for some meat, but the meat was unsatisfactory to him.
No. No. No. Ah ha! Wait, no. MorningStar Farms.
The monster heard the robot speak.
“I’ll start cooking,” Zane said.
Sht!
The monster immediately closed the door and took a step to the side. Zane entered the room and opened the fridge.
“What?” Zane tilt his head. “Who on earth rearranged the food?”
The monster went back to check on the fleshing and its family.
“Ssssso, you gonna tell me what happened with Clay?” Kai asked.
“How about after dinner?” Cole suggested.
“I’m gonna fall asssssleep by then.”
“Okay, fine. I’ll tell you during dinner.”
Clay was cooing, and Sky looked angry.
The fleshing brother is angry... but about what?
The monster looked at Clay.
I can’t delay this. I need to do it... When everyone is asleep.
The monster looked at the clock. When he looked away, it was night time. The snake one was asleep. The monster went to the fleshing’s room. It was fast asleep.
Good. Now to start this.
The monster went up to the fleshing, and put his claws on the baby head.
The scene changed, and the monster was in a grass field. He looked around for the fleshing.
“Tío?” A small baby voice said.
The monster turned around to see the small fleshing.
“Ah, so you use the dreamworld to speak to me?” The monster asked.
“Tío!”
The baby giggled. The monster shook his head in disappointment. Did he really reconsider this?
“Fleshing, you have another thing coming. Today is your-”
“Tío!”
Clay bapped on the monsters leg, and he started to become human.
“What the! You don’t have power here unless... lucid dream. Of course.”
Clay giggled and tried to climb the monster.
“Excuse me,” the monster growled. “I am trying to tell you-”
“Tío!” Clay whined and held his arms up.
“What, do you want me to pick you up?”
Clay started to whimper.
“Tío?”
“Fine. I’ll pick you up.”
The monster picked Clay up, and he hugged the monster.
“What are you doing fleshing?”
“Clay!”
“Fine. Clay. Do you think you can change my mind?”
“Tío!”
“Why do you keep on calling me Tío!?”
Clay started to whimper. The monster sighed.
“I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have yelled.”
“Tío?”
The monster sighed. This fleshing, no, Clay seemed different from the other children the monster ran into.
“You are different I admit. I guess... keeping you around won’t hurt me.”
Clay cheered and clapped.
“Silly little fleshing.”
“Tío.”
“Uh, perhaps call me something other than Tío. Like... can’t believe I’m saying this, but call me Alvar.”
“Abadada.”
“... Close enough.”
Hm, I wonder what Lana is looking at. She seems quite cross.
Ah, sorry! Sometimes I talk to myself.
Z: O... Kay. Well the bottle is ready.
Cole takes the bottle and starts to feed it to Clay.
C: There we go.
What is this... drink the fleshing is drinking?
No.
C: No... what?
Z: Is something going on?
Careful what you say next, void.
Empathy's a complicated thing, buddy... If you're still hungry, you could try raiding the fridge?
Fridge? The mysterious box that the robot put the plants and meat in?
Well, I guess I can have fun while here.
If you eat the baby, you are ending a life and destroying others. His parents will cry and mourn, knowing they couldn’t do anything to stop this. His brothers will grow up, wondering what happened to their brother. His aunts, uncles, grandparents will be so sad that they lost a family member to an unknown entity. You might twist the parents into a paranoia that can never be reversed. Do you really want to take this baby away from his family?
Kai is holding Clay close, and he is hugging his Papa. Cole is watching, smiling. He is happy that his husband and baby are safe. Sky is still reaching for the tail, not paying much attention to his surroundings.
The monster looks at the scene. It’s whole life, it hasn’t cared about the actions of its consequences. Why now?
You got a problem with snakes?
No, but... why is this one like this?
Clay looks at the monster again.
K: What’sssss up, buggie?
Clay reaches out for the monster, making noises. Kai’s expression begins to sadden.
K: I’m afraid we can’t go outssssside. Well, I can’t. I have to ssssstay in here... where it’sssss warm... and nice... where I won’t be able to sssssee you or your brothersssss have fun.
Clay whines and hugs Kai.
The monster felt something inside it shift. Why did it feel... sympathy for the snake and it’s fleshing?
