You probably answered this at some point in the past, but how do you feel about Zelda 2 on the NES? You like side-scrolling, or prefer top-down?
I enjoy Zelda 2 a lot. Very cool game. I do think it’s an overall less comfortable experience than the first game though.
I like side-scroling, but I prefer top-down in Zelda. It’s nothing against the former, but side-scrolling has not been a common occurrence in the Zelda games, so it’s just not typical. I do love when the games have side-scrolling sections though.
Zelda 2 is an old game, so it’s gameplay is limited to what we might do today. I do think the high & low attacks were a really cool idea though.
Panoply of Calatia
A fan game that uses the ZeldaClassic engine; it’s pretty much Zelda 3. It takes place directly AFTER Zelda 2, so there’s two Princess Zeldas, and it borrows from classic Zelda lore. What little of it there is.
This game fuses a lot of Zelda 1 & 2 together, and it really works. It honestly feels like it could genuinely have been the next NES game, if it were built with a tiny bit more complexity system-wise. There’s two parts of the game too, much like how Zelda 1 had multiple quests -- except this time they’re connected rather than just a remixed world map.
You’ll move between top-down and side-scrolling portions as you play, on the world map, and even through dungeons. Some dungeons will even feature A LOT of side-scrolling, to the point where they’re just as much a side-scrolling dungeon as a top-down dungeon -- or more.
The start of the second quest has such a great narrative moment, and I really should finish the game. I streamed it once or twice.
I’ll reblog my previous post of it in a moment.
