Deadline: Nathan Fillion Says ‘Firefly’ Animated Series In Development With Co-Stars Set To Reprise Roles; Concept Art Revealed

Today, Sunday, March 15th 2026, Nathan Fillion and the remaining core crew of Serenity announced at Awesome Con in DC that they are bringing back Firefly as an animated series called Firefly: Still Flyin'.

In the video posted on the Once We Were Spacemen (OWWS) Instagram account, Nathan detailed what they would need and who has signed on to the project thus far:

Showrunners: a married couple who met through Firefly! Tara Butters (Dollhouse, Agent Carter, Reaper) and Marc Guggenheim (DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Arrow)

In the video, Nathan goes on to say that the last thing they need is a home. He asks everyone to like, comment on, and tag your friends in this post to spread the word and get Firefly: Still Flyin' a home.

While it was not explicitly stated in Nathan's video, Deadline's article on the announcement states:

"Joss Whedon, who created the original series, is not involved in the animated project."

A Firefly revival is being developed as an animated series.

Nathan Fillion, Alan Tudyk, Gina Torres, Jewel Staite, Morena Baccarin, Sean Maher, Summer Glau, and Adam Baldwin are expected to reprise their roles.

The animated reboot is being developed through Fillion’s production banner Collision33 in partnership with 20th Television Animation, which controls the underlying rights to the franchise.

Married writing-producing team Marc Guggenheim (DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Arrow) and Tara Butters (Agent Carter, Reaper) are attached to serve as showrunners, and a script has been completed. Joss Whedon, who created the original series, is not involved in the animated project. During today’s panel, Fillion confirmed Whedon has given the series his blessing.

The proposed series is set in the timeline between the original 2002 television run and its 2005 feature film continuation, Serenity, expanding the universe while preserving continuity with the established lore. Early concept art has been developed in collaboration with the Oscar and Emmy-award-winning animation studio ShadowMachine, which can be found below. The fully assembled package is expected to be taken out to buyers shortly.

"Firefly" Sequel Series In Development At 20th Television Animation With "Arrow" Creators As Showrunners And Whole Cast To Return.

Firefly fans are in for a treat. Nathan Fillion has just revealed at Awesome Con, 2026 that an animated Firefly series is in advanced development at 20th Television Animation.

Married writing-producing team Marc Guggenheim (DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Arrow) and Tara Butters (Marvel Television "Agent Carter", The CW "Reaper") are attached to serve as showrunners, and a script has been completed. Joss Whedon, who created the original series, is not involved in the animated project.

The proposed sequel series is set in the timeline between the series finale after the original 2002 television run and its 2005 feature film continuation, Serenity, expanding the universe while preserving continuity with the established lore.  Alan Tudyk, Gina Torres, Jewel Staite, Morena Baccarin, Sean Maher, and Summer Glau, all of whom are expected to reprise their roles. Adam Baldwin, who played Jayne Cobb, will also lend his voice to the project. The sequel series is being developed through Fillion’s production banner Collision33 in partnership with 20th Television Animation and Disney Television Studios controls the underlying rights to the franchise and SHADOWMACHINE (Netflix "Bojack Horseman", TBS "Final Space", MTV Animation "Clone High") as animation services house. No streamer was announced but likely the project will be for Hulu to expand it's adult animation catalog.

The announcement culminates a week-long viral social media campaign teasing that news was on the horizon. The videos’ millions of views have brought Firefly back to the forefront of trending topics. It also follows yesterday’s confirmation that the "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" reboot by Chloé Zhao would not be picked up to series at Hulu.

Other projects at 20th Television Animation in development include "The Kids from S.I.P.P.Y." created by Branson Reese (Cartoon Network “We Bare Bears” franchise)and Nicole Silverberg (TBS “Full Frontal with Samantha Bee”), "Swamp Meet" created by comedian Ralph Barbosa and Isaac Gonzales (Cartoon Network Studios “Victor & Valentino”), “Bad Friends” inspired by the podcast of the same name with Andres Salaff (Cartoon Network Studios “Regular Show”, Nickelodeon Animation Studios “Harvey Beaks”) as executive producer and showrunner and “Journey To The Center Of The Internet” created by on Nick Kreiss and Nick Smith.

The studio recently gave series order to “Deano” created by Dean Thomas, David Ferrier and “Bluey” creator Joe Brumm serving as executive producer and "Family Guy" spin-off "Stewie" created by Seth McFarlane and Kirker Butler.
