I feel like Kokichi's "official" title is a lie in itself, as he is merely the leader of DICE. It is the fact tha he sells it so well which could have earned him the title. Kodaka did mention that Kokichi would be properly the Ultimate Liar, and I personally find it fitting that his title being a lie is rather the point. At the same time, it hides a hint of truth, just like Kokichi says that there is always a shred of truth in a lie. :)

I’m sorry to say, but there is very little chance that Kokichi’s given title, “Ultimate Supreme Leader,” is a lie. 

Aside from the “Everything is fiction... maybe” plot twist, no other characters are hinted at or show to have Ultimate Titles that aren’t their given titles, aside from Maki, and Maki’s official title is the title Monokuma addresses her as in her motive video. Otherwise, Ryoma would not have been able to blackmail Maki in case #2. 

We already have a case of a false given title, so if we use that as a frame of reference, it becomes clear that Kokichi does not follow the same exception. Because Maki’s given title was initially false, with her motive video revealing her true title, Kokichi’s would have to follow the same principles if he were to have a fake given title.

Kokichi’s given title, “Ultimate Supreme Leader,” is what Monokuma refers to him as in his motive video and his research lab reflects this title more so than any other.

I also want to say something about my views towards Kodaka: Do not take his word at face value.

This is the same man who apparently intended to write Kokichi to be a trickster character who genuinely enjoyed the class trials and killing game while also writing his entire character arc to be about his anti-violence and him sacrificing his own life to break the killing game. Sorry, Kodaka, that’s not how writing works.

He’s also insisted that Kaede needed the help of her friends while Makoto and Hajime were independent. As if Maoto didn’t need Kyoko to hold his hand through the whole game. Take that as you will about his... morals.

Kodaka either A: Lies about his intentions for characters, or B: Is so bad at conveying his intentions via writing that his words and narrative don’t match up.

Kodaka also wrote Kokichi to be neglected, abused and ignored for no good reason due to personal beliefs rather than giving the cast or narrative any good reason to punish Kokichi until Chapter 4, when Kokichi’s already endured a lot of abuse from the narrative and his classmates.

I’m going to say this now, I ignore the intention of the writers. Especially here. The intention of the writers cloud theorizing and even analytical posts, so don’t expect me to use Kodaka’s words as a frame of reference or as “proof” of something since he’s an unreliable source of information to begin with.

I’ll also say that it’s... really bad to call Kokichi the “Ultimate Liar” for several reasons. The major big one is that its borderline ableist and degrading, since Kokichi’s lying is very clearly compulsive lying. Which is a disorder.

A more in-canon reason why Kokichi is very unlikely to be the ultimate liar is because... he’s not actually good at lying at all.

The point of lying is to make people believe the lie. Kokichi doesn’t use lying to obscure the truth, nor does he even lie convincingly. Kokichi lies as a method of controlling the truth in regards to himself and the information he has. He lies as a defense mechanism to protect the truth he knows, and he has a say in when it is revealed or not. This sort of ties in with the compulsive lying and may be the reason why he does compulsively lie.

To clarify further with an example: The Ultimate Writer can’t just be a writer who writes a lot of books. They have to be able to write amazing novels at all times, quality over quantity. 

With this logic, you can see why it’s very unlikely Kokichi is the Ultimate Liar as his true title.

The issue that Kokichi is “only the leader of D.I.C.E.” follows the same principle. Kokichi’s quality leadership triumphs over the quantity of people he leads. We are also unaware of how Kokichi got his title to begin with, so it’s very possible that he was forced into a situation where he had to use his leadership skills to get out of trouble or lead others to the best possible solution. That’s headcanon territory though.

Sorry this is harsh and blunt (and maybe a bit salty) but I figured it’d be best to get my stance on this out of the way since it came up.

I totes agree. Not only the phantom thief thing ties the LSE with the FTE --hell, it makes it even more blatant, and that is not even taking D.I.C.E to account-- but the whole dynamic. How there is undeniable attraction of sorts between both, particularly when elaborated. The whole "be yourself" would give an analysis on its own because of their quirks, too. Also Kaede = ship bait +10. Inspiration does not always mean undying love. Just take Makoto and Sayaka. \o/

Actually, the LSE doesn’t have that tie with the FTE, as the FTE doesn’t mention the thief aspect--LSE draws the thief aspect from the main game itself. Chapter 3, Angie’s body discovery. Kokichi’s classmates pressured him to use his lock picking to open the lock on Angie’s lab door. This is when Kokichi’s lock picking is mentioned first.

However, I’d be hesitant to say that it is canon by any means. OumaSai is my main jam, don’t get me wrong, but I think the LSE may reflect more of Kokichi’s values for his potential partner, whomever that may be, to remain as they are without changing for him or anyone else. Shuichi played the role of himself not because he is Kokichi’s true ideal, but because Kokichi can’t imagine Shuichi as anything but himself. For example, had Kaede been in Shuichi’s place, Kaede would be acting as herself rather than like Shuichi. That’s the idea.

Kokichi doesn’t have an “Ideal” person, but rather, to be his Ideal, you two have to simply get along and you have to remain as yourself. 

Kaede’s role in the canon is a real shame, she really deserved so much better than to be waifu/ship bait.

I am going to set aside my shyness and ask the experts. You see, I am currently starting to write a post-V3 story which will explore Kokichi's character and talent (aside from other stuff that I have been overthinking for a while now) and one of my points is a theory involving him being an Ultimate Analyst as "true" talent just like Junko or Izuru, and that is what allows him to actually be the Ultimate Liar ergo the Ultimate Supreme Leader. May I ask your thoughts on it? :)

There is no doubt in my mind that Kokichi has the Ultimate Analysis ability. 

I’d be more surprised if he didn’t have it. He’s far to quick, able to adapt and manipulate anyone on a whim. His intelligence and analytical ability is incredible, and is far more realistic than what we have seen with Junko and Izuru.

However, that’s why he can’t be given the title of “Ultimate Analyst.” Junko and Izuru both possess an analytical ability to powerful that it bores them to death. Junko’s analytical ability is so potent that she quite literally drives herself mad with despair just to get away from how boring everything is. Izuru appears to remain neutral without influence and passively accepts it as a fact of his being. They both have extremely over powered analytical abilities.

However, Kokichi is different. He doesn’t seem to be bored of life at all, and finds lots of joy in it. He also states that Shuichi is able to surprise him, which is something that Junko and Izuru both aren’t so frequently phased by.

I do believe that Kokichi teeters on the edge of this despair, however, running away from the boredom that comes with over-analyzing by acting in erratic ways. He also states in his salmon mode dates with Shuichi that he likes movies that allow him to sit and not think much for a while.

So yes, I do agree with the notion that Kokichi is gifted with this analysis ability, but I don’t think that the ability alone warrants scouting due to Junko and Izuru’s existence.

I think that what the game gives us as his title is the truth--he’s a Leader. The Ultimate Leader.

The “supreme” part of his title aside, I could do a whole huge multi-part analysis on Kokichi’s ability and how it ties in to his leadership skills, but I don’t actually have the time right now, so I’ll be brief. 

Kokichi is a true leader at heart. He always has in mind the limitations of the others in his head and uses/exposes certain traits to manipulate and “lead” the group some how. 

A shining example o his leadership skills is how he handles Kaede in the Death Road of Despair Tunnels.

However, that is my own personal interpretation, and I do think that it’s very possible he has the ability. Sorry if this sounds rushed and it may be short and blunt but I’m late for an appointment, sorry!

Just a quick disclaimer, it’s a good headcanon and I’m not saying it’s a bad idea or anything. I do agree with you--but I think he more so uses the analytical ability to enhance his leadership talents. That’s all.

Nah, it is alright. I am simply weaving theories as I write and because Kokichi is an enigma in himself I just spit whatever crosses my mind. I am quite interested in reading all the interpretations and how they might get us closer to Kokichi's true nature. I do agree he is a great leader hence the hidden truth of his title, but there is a thing that irks me about it and it is his trust issues. Otherwise, yes, he would be a Supreme Leader alright, just not of "evil". :D

Kokichi is difficult to understand and has many valid interpretations for headcanons and fanfictions. Even I have difficulties navigating his web of lies, but I’m trying to do so without biased interpretations and am only focusing on the narrative given when dealing with trying to pick out what are “facts” and what are up to interpretation.

Kokichi’s title is a fact, sadly. At the very least, it is a fact that he was given this title, whether or not the title itself was changed upon his request. It’s likely that his “real” talent and “real title” is somehow related to his current given title, if his current one is misleading.

Occam’s Razor says Kokichi is very unlikely to be an exception to the rule since we have Maki as a point of reference. Without the narrative explicitly stating otherwise, it’s best to leave anything that does not follow the Occam’s Razor up to fanfiction and creative expression.

For that ask and this blog, however, I try to follow the Occam’s Razor as best as I can to keep things as close to “canon” as possible with as little bias as possible on my behalf. Theories are subjected to go a little further out of the way, but the simplest solution is the best solution, and I’m aiming to keep my analysis posts and theories as simple as they can be.

With Final Fantasy Record Keeper's latest event focusing on Fang and Vanille and being titled "Of Lies and Love" and having as the featured picture the moment of the Fanille reunion when Vanille held the boob I think there is no reason to say it isn't officially canon anymore. It's the gayest thing Squenix could've come up with. ;>

tbh I just wish they would do that in a future FF game - make a character that just flat-out says they’re gay, whether they’re in a relationship or not. no “hints” about it, no subtext, no vague confirmation in a mobile game or novel or whatever - just boom, here’s a character, they’re gay
