Random question and I hope the way I'm phrasing this makes sense... But do you know of an online calculator or a formula I can use to determine the length of a 6-strand floss to cut if I know how many stitches in 2-strands it's going to take? I'll do it, but I don't really want to travel to work and sort through 30 bobbins if I don't have to.
Shoot, not exactly! I've seen this table pop up with some regularity, including as a basis for this calculator (and probably most of the others, tbh), but it's all calculating stitches per skein.
Let's see... Winstitch's thread estimator seems to use a ratio of roughly 0.556 cm/stitch. No info on how they're getting those numbers, but I trust Jeff's stuff. I think that number would have to be not taking into account number of strands used, so--
If you're cutting from regular 6-strand floss and planning on using 2 strands, that means that every 1 centimeter you cut will actually be enough for 3 centimeters of stitching (e.g. if you needed to stitch 12cm worth of stitches, you could cut 4cm of floss, divide it into three 2-strand sections, and then have enough*). So when cutting from the 6-strand floss you'll actually need (0.556 ÷ 3) cm/stitch, or 0.1853 cm/stitch.
To build a formula, then:
0.1853 * (number of stitches)
...and add a decent amount of buffer, because:
*this does NOT take into account thread used when tying off each thread, or having lots of traveling stitches.
If any math people are up, though, please check my work-- it's pretty late where I'm at and I may have fucked it up somewhere.
