do you let your students say "tu" when they talk to you? once someone accidentally did that to my french teacher and she almost flipped a table

Wow! Your teacher sounds a little harsh! I wonder why so many french teachers such intensely traditional people?

I typically let my students use “tu”, especially because they also call me by my first name … but I always make sure they know that, in the context of a typical French classroom, the “vous” would be more appropriate. Just like in most classrooms you would call your teacher Mr/Mrs/Miss (or Monsieur/Madame/Mademoiselle) + their-last-name, it’s a sign of respect. To just default to the “tu” form would be like assuming it’s okay to call your teacher by their first name, which most teachers aren’t comfortable with.
