24. eating from each other’s plates
Intimate moments
Warnings: Food mentions
There were many difficult decisions that a person had to make in their life.
Good or evil?
Right or wrong?
Career or family?
Cheesecake or brownie?
“I’ll have the brownie please,” you told the waiter, thinking as soon as the words had left your mouth that you should have picked the cheesecake.
“And I’ll have the cheesecake please,” Shang-Chi added before the waiter left your table again.
The two of you hadn’t found time to go out for dinner in weeks and it had been a lovely night of enjoying the food and each other’s company. Holding hands across the table, laughing and sharing stories about your jobs, it was possible to forget about everything that had been stressing you out. Looking up from the table only to find him already smiling at you awoke just as many butterflies in your belly then as it had when you had only just started dating him.
“We should walk home,” he suggested, “It’s a nice night.”
You quirked an eyebrow at him in amusement. “You know, you’re one of the only people I’d feel safe walking in New York at night with.”
He grinned. “I’m honoured.” A second later, he cocked his head curiously. “Who else would you feel safe with?”
“Uh, Black Widow,” you said as though it was obvious, biting back a grin, “She’d keep me safe.”
Shang-Chi nodded slowly, rolling his lips together to stop himself laughing. “Of course.”
At that moment, the waiter returned to the table with your desserts, setting the brownie in front of you and the cheesecake in front of your boyfriend. Your plate looked delicious but you still weren’t convinced by your decision. Nonetheless, you lifted your spoon to-
-completely miss your brownie as Shang-Chi moved your plate to the middle of the table. Before you could question him for stealing your dessert literally from under your nose, he pushed his own plate to the middle too.
“Help yourself,” he told you with a knowing smile, taking a spoonful of your brownie followed by a spoonful of cheesecake.
Your lips parted in realisation; the man had ordered the option you hadn’t gone with so that you didn’t really have to choose. It was such a small gesture and yet so sweet that it was a few seconds before you could bring yourself to stop staring lovingly at him and take a mouthful of dessert. As your spoons clicked against each other and he gave you a playful grin before pushing a piece of cheesecake onto your spoon with his own, you found yourself thinking just one thing.
Perhaps true love was about being with the person who never made you choose between cheesecake or a brownie.
Will I ever stop writing these? Definitely not in the near future XD
Ship: Shang-Chi x female Asian reader
Genre: Fluff, Romance
Warnings: None
After you started dating Shaun, everything was just perfect. You had the sweetest dates and spent a lot of time just laughing, talking or cuddling. Not even the relevation of his past and the ownership of those ominous 10 rings could bring you down from your cloud 9 feeling.
But there was one thing you did worry about: it was time to introduce him to your family. It’s been months and they had all started nagging you about bringing your boyfriend over finally. It was unheard of that you would keep him secret for so long. Your older sister had brought her now husband over just a month after the first date after all!
Your family wasn’t bad, not at all. They were just... well, they were a lot to handle. Especially with so many family members. Four generations lived spread out among various apartments in the building with you being the only one living elsewhere (which was another thing your family constantly complained about). And now it was time to introduce Shaun to this crazy bunch. He was more of the quiet type. Not shy or a total introvert, but definitely not as loud and out there as the rest of your family and you were worried the situation would have him run for his life.
“Shang-Chi...”, you started one morning, while you were sitting at the tiny table in his aparment, eating breakfast.
“Hm?”, he asked, looking up curiously, as you used his birth name.
“There is this event next friday... Well, not really event, but I’d like to go with you.”
“Can you make it sound any more ominous?”, he joked and you found some of the tension slipping away and a smile coming through.
“My family is having a get-together and I want to introduce you.”, you just blurted. “I was hoping we could do this step by step, but I think it’s best if you meet all of them at once.”
“Sure, that sounds nice.”, he said after the first moment of confusion passed. He had never pried why you didn’t introduce him sooner, leaving the timing up to you.
He sounded so optimistic about it as well, while you were still worried your family would smother him to death. Some of your friends envied you for their loving nature, coming from strict asian households, but you simply got the other extreme.
“Just... be ready for a lot, ok?”, you told him.
“A lot of what?”, Shaun asked, eyebrow rising slowly.
“Everything.”, you just said with a sigh.
______
When next friday rolled around, you were a bundle of nerves, whereas Shaun looked as calm as ever. He had dressed up nicely in black pants and a shirt, wanting to leave a good impression and you put on the black and white dress your grandmother had bought you last christmas.
“Ok, let’s just quickly go over the names again.”, he said, as you headed out. And there were quite a few to remember. Your parents would be there, along with your grandparents. Then there was also your older sister with her husband and two children and of course your two aunts with their families as well.
“Don’t worry if you don’t remember.”, you assured him. By the time you arrived at the apartment complex, you took a deep breath and squeezed Shaun’s hand tightly. He had no idea what he was getting himself into.
The moment the door to the apartment opened, all eyes were on you two and for the first time, you could feel your boyfriend tense up. A moment later, he was practically torn out of your hand by your mother, who came to hug him.
“Shang-Chi, welcome! We have heard so much about you and now you are finally here!”, the older lady began, her face beaming with joy. She hugged him again and then took another look. “Mama, look. I told you he was handsome.”
It seemed the official handover, because a second later, Shaun found himself in the arms of the next family member, this time your grandmother. And so it went for a good 10 minutes with hugs and handshakes from everyone. The kids were excited, because they had seen his bus fight video and kept begging for some martial arts lessons.
The small apartment was full of people and the scent of tea and spices. You were soon separated completely from Shaun, as you found yourself in a conversation with your sister and aunt about some business they wanted to open. Seeing as you had knowledge in finance, they wanted your opinion on their little venture. You had no idea how long you had chatted away, but eventually you excused yourself and went looking for your boyfriend.
You found him in the living room, listening to your grandparents tell their stories of the good olden days. They would constantly bicker lovingly in the middle and interrupt each other. It was adorable, but for outsiders, probably boring. Shaun however seemed really entertained, as he listened with a smile on his face and even kept asking questions that encouraged the old couple to continue. When he saw you, his face lit up even more and he gave you a small wave. You were just about to walk over, when your mother put her hand through the door and announced: “Ok, we are ready. Everyone gather in the kitchen!”
Now was the time for the big family tradition. You had told your boyfriend all about it and he had seemed both amazed and confused. Once a month, your family got together like that to just talk and make dumplings together for a big family dinner. Grandma instatly insisted that Shaun sit next to her and you were quick to grab the other spot on his side before someone else could beat you to it.
“Grandson, have you ever made dumplings?”, your granny asked, making you wonder when she had switched from his name to calling him grandson already.
“Never actually.”, he revealed, which earned him a crash course. Your grandma knew how to make the most elaborate shapes and you could see that your boyfriend was struggling with them. You were just about to offer help, when your father said: “Here, let me show you an easier form.”
“Don’t show him your ugly technique!”, Grandma complained, swatting his hand lightly. “Let the boy learn it properly.”
“Here, I got one that’s good.”, your sister’s husband started. He was the only non-asian in the room, but as a cook, he had spent a lot of time in Asia, learning various cooking techniques. His Mandarin was also surprisingly good for a foreigner.
“You are a master chef, John. Let Shang-Chi learn from someone who doesn’t do this all day for a living”, your sister pointed out, elbowing him slightly. Within seconds, there was a war on who would teach him a good dumpling technique and while you wanted to facepalm yourself, your boyfriend watched on in amusement. Suddenly you felt something wedge in between the two of you, discovering your oldest nephew. “Here, do it like that.”, he said, using the time everyone was distracted to give him a mini tutorial that Shaun could copy with ease. “Thanks, buddy.”
The rest of the evening was jus as loud and wild as you were used to and, to your surprise, Shaun seemed to thrive in this environemnt as well. He talked and laughed with everyone and didn’t even seem to mind when you got separated here and there.
It was already past 2am when you started your way home back to his place. “How was it?”, you asked, fighting back a yawn.
“It was fun.”, he said honestly. “Intense, but fun. You are very lucky.”
You looked at him, silently asking for an elaboration.
“To have a loving family like that. I can see why it might seem like a lot, but they are amazing.”
They really were. You knew that and you wouldn’t trade them for the world, no matter how overbearing they could be.
“They are your family too now.”, you reminded him with a grin. “I don’t thnk they will ever let you go again.”
At that he reached for your hand and squeezed it. “Thank you. That means a lot to me.”, he said and you could feel the honesty in every word.
“I also won’t let you go again.”, you added with a warm smile, causing him to stop in the middle of the street to pull you into a tight hug.
“I love you, Y/N.”, he whispered. “You and your crazy family.”
You laughed at that, returning the hug. “Good, cause we are invited to come back next month. And every month after that.”
“Deal.”, he said, before giving you a loving kiss. “I can’t wait.”
A/N: Not sure why I’m even writing this because I’m fairly certain everyone and their mother no longer reads this (can’t blame anyone, I haven’t updated this in months) but here we are, with my nonsensical rambling. Good shit.

Summary: Finally in Greece. I mean, how awkward can it be, right?
Previous Chapter: Scream For Me (10)
WC: 3.1k
Packing your bags and boarding the plane to Greece, you were calm, cool, and collected. You didn’t seem nearly as nervous or frightened as you had been in the days leading up to your decision to get this done. Well, you seemed just as guarded about it as you had those times, but you did seem just a tad bit more relaxed as the day to depart approached. However, on the plane, it was an entirely different story.
Sitting in the middle was Shangqi, flanked by you and Katy on either side of him. Shangqi had on his headphones and was happily listening to music. Katy was eating the snack she had stolen from Shangqi, and you were humming along to the music playing in the movie your eyes were focused on, but that you weren’t paying any attention to in the slightest aside from the soundtrack. Shangqi’s hand was covering yours because he knew, without you saying anything at all, that you were overthinking this.
Why were you even doing this, really? You had a family of your own. It was your distressed little found family, held together by pieces of Scotch tape, but it was yours, and it had gotten you through most of your life, but you just couldn’t help yourself. This was finally your chance. You weren’t busy saving the world, obligated to go on missions, throwing yourself into danger anyway to help people around you. This was finally a moment for you to do something for yourself, and as much as it frightened you, you had to satisfy the curiosity you had your entire life.
Well, for the part of your life that you remembered, at least.
Arriving in Greece, the three of you went straight to your destination. Jet lag be damned, you three had packed light and timed it so you arrived early in the day and could get started right away. It was better to get this over with than give you time to pull out and go find a world tragedy to insert yourself into. With backpacks, the card you had been given with instructions, and a couple of snacks you had picked out, the three of you were hiking up the mountains of Olympus on a tourist-laden trail to your destination passed the Enipeas waterfall.
You three had stopped several times on the hike to rest, eat, and hydrate, given that the lengthy travel time had already taken away most of your energy. As you sat on a rock, sticking your feet in a small body of water while a few feet away from you children shrieked and splashed each other, Shangqi plunked down next to you, and Katy shoved him off the rock to sit on the floor while she sat beside you and he sucked his teeth.
“So what do we do when we pass the waterfall,?” Katy asked you. “Do we just shout or pray or something?”
“Not sure,” you confessed. “Thor travels through something called a Bifrost. He used to shout for Heimdall, but I think he does it all by himself now like a big boy. I’m just going to hope we don’t walk through some invisible portal and the other end is a cliff.”
“That’s something to think about,” Shangqi joked as he drank water and passed you the bottle. “Mount Olympus. Man, this is crazy. Also...do you think they speak English, or are we fucked?”
“Wait, can you speak Greek, Y/N?”
“I don’t think it’s exactly the same as what they spoke — or speak up there, but, no, not one of the languages I learned at SHIELD, wasn’t high on their list for me.”
“...Why do you know so many languages, Y/N?” Katy asked slowly.
“Blend in better when I went to kill people,” you shrugged as you checked your GPS. “Okay. We have a ways to go. The trail ends at Prionia. I don’t know if we go there, or if we just have to rent some gear and go up to the very tip of the mountain —“ The two of them groaned loudly, prompting you to do exactly what you thought you should do, abandon ship. “You’re right. This is dumb and exhausting, let’s go home.”
“No, no, come on. We’ll stop complaining,” Shangqi reached up and grabbed your thigh, his head falling back against your knee as he stared up at you. “We’re doing this. You went on my family’s crazy adventure, we’re going on yours.”
“Yeah. Plus, I want to brag about this to everyone we know. I may not be a lawyer, mom, but am I seeing Mount Olympus like in the Hercules movie and cartoon? Yes.”
You snorted and nodded, “Okay. Come on, then, just a little more to go.”
“That’s a kind way of putting it,” Katy whined as you stood up.
“Think of it as your cardio routine you keep putting off,” you said as you dusted off your pants. “Okay. Time to go.”
The three of you continued on your journey again, making it to Prionia late in the day, and having no clue of what to do next. Starving and tired, you went to a small restaurant to recover and get some much-needed food in your system. While your fiancé and best friend were looking through the menu, you were staring out the window and up at the mountain’s peak. Did you have to climb all the way up there? To what, jump off and hope it leads to another realm?
“Oh my god,” Katy moaned. “I want to fuck these potatoes.”
You chuckled to yourself until it hit you, and suddenly, you wanted to literally hit yourself, “Shit.”
“What?” Shangqi asked quickly.
“Remember how Katy drove us through the murder forest to get to Ta Lo and we ended up going through a —“
“No, not again,” Shangqi put his fork down. “I do not want to sit through that again.”
“No, no,” you said quickly. “I think we just need to...go back down and walk through the Enipeas waterfall.”
If looks could kill, you were certain they would have found the nearest reflective surfaces and killed themselves. They looked as though everything they ever did in life to lead them here was an instant regret, and you definitely had contributed to that, unfortunately for them. You offered an apologetic smile and said that dinner would be on you that evening, to which Katy sighed, nodded in agreement, and looked around for the nearest waiter so that she may add to her order.
You returned to staring out the window when you felt a gust of air blow. Your eyes traveled up and down to see where the wind was coming from but found nothing. You turned to Shangqi and Katy who were staring down at the table and frozen in place. Following their gaze, you saw yet another golden card resting on the table.
“Okay,” Shangqi nodded. “Maybe you should read it.”
“I don’t want to. I have so much regret over this trip already,” you mumbled quietly and grabbed the card. Joining Shangqi’s family affairs in another realm? Easy. Fighting Thanos? Stupid easy. Dealing with your own issues? Difficult.
Turning the card over, you read the cursive that glimmered against it.
Don’t turn around. You were right. You’re in the right place. Cross the bridge and wait by the arches.
“Good news, we don’t have to go back!”
“Thank god -- I’m not sending back what I ordered, though,” Katy said quickly.
“Bad news?” Shangqi asked.
“I don’t think so. Just a little short walk over the bridge and over to some arches. I guess we’ll just go from there.”
“So,” Katy cleared her throat and looked to you, hands folded on the table. “A gust of wind and suddenly a card, like if a person was running super, super fast. It’s almost like it’s Hermes trying to send you messages, right?”
Her grin was met by your cringing. You leaned forward on the table and held your face in your hands, “Norse gods I can handle, for some reason. Been there, done that, but, I mean, the Greek deities -- “
“It’s only weird because they’re related to you,” Shangqi reasoned. “Come on. This isn’t that bad, right? I mean, your boss keeps saying he’s the Devil.”
“This is true,” you nodded and sat up. “Okay. This is fine. I am badass. This is what I’ve always wanted, it’s no time to chicken out now.”
“There you go, babe,” Shangqi grinned and took your hand in his to give it a squeeze. “But if we have to walk another 12 miles to those arches, I’m sleeping in a tree tonight to rest.”
“That is absolutely fair, sweetheart.”
After dinner, the three of you once again were on your way. It was a short walk to the only bridge in town, and an even shorter one across it. Not far in the distance, you could see a set of crumbling, barely standing stone arches. You elbowed Katy and watched her shout in relief and thank Thor as she raced across the rest of the way to get there. You could feel a hand tugging on yours, and you looked over your shoulder and up to see Shangqi give you a warm smile before leaning down to steal a kiss and catch up to Katy.
The three of you stood by the arches and looked around for anything, a button, another golden card, something. If this was the door you were looking for, you had no idea how to use it to get through. You placed your hand on the arch and stared up at the sky trying to think of what to do when suddenly the stone around your hand glowed in a soft, golden hue. Shangqi cleared his throat to draw your attention, and you saw it.
“Well, damn,” you mumbled under your breath. When you pulled your hand away, the golden color disappeared. You placed your hand on it again and stared at it as the color returned. “Okay. So if I touch it, something happens, but how --”
You never finished your questioning. Suddenly, the ground opened up beneath you, dirt and rocks crumbling down before you started to go with it. You screamed and tried to hold on to the arch, but everything was falling just too fast. Shangqi grabbed your arm to try to pull you back, but he was sucked in as well. Katy grabbed his arm, and she was pulled in alongside him. The three of you were screaming as you shot down a tunnel of dirt, rocks, twigs, and possibly some questionable fossils buried deep in the earth. You burst through the earth, rolling, tumbling over each other until you all finally stopped.
Shangqi was coughing and spitting up dirt, Katy was pulling twigs from her hair, and you were sneezing uncontrollably until all the dirt was gone from your nose. When you three recovered, you looked at your surroundings. There was a cobbled road ahead of you, trees surrounding the pathway, a small town in the distance, and then when you looked up, you could see what looked like a rainbow bridge connecting the land to the sky, wherein the middle of the clouds you could see the opulence and grandeur of what one could imagine Mount Olympus to look like.
“Wow, this is happening,” you laughed a little as you all stood up. “This is amazing.”
“This is seriously better than the cartoons,” Katy muttered. “Not that Ta Lo wasn’t utterly amazing, but, wow.”
“It’s incredible,” Shangqi breathed in agreement. “Come on. Sun’s starting to set here, we should get going.”
“Yeah, before some big bad wolf comes out,” Katy teased.
You set forth on your journey once again. As you approached the town, you could see the people there. Just as one could imagine, long, flowing cloths and cloaks adorned their bodies, sandals, and sashes. Some were carrying large baskets, and you could see that a handful were carrying massive jugs, likely full of wine. This entire thing felt completely unreal, and a part of you wondered if you should’ve just stuck with your misconception that you were an alien, because if this place really existed, if these people were real…then who, exactly, were you meeting who claimed to be your father?
As the town grew closer, you could hear people screaming in fear. The three of you looked up to see actual harpies, creatures with a bird’s body and a woman’s head, shrieking as they descended on the town, their claws out to grab and pluck at the villagers.
“Katy, bow,” you said quickly as Shangqi rolled up his sleeves and the rings shot out of his backpack and onto his forearms. “Draw their attention this way.”
“Got it,” Katy nodded, opened her case, and quickly grabbed her bow and an arrow from it. She knelt down, aimed at the sky, and fired. It stuck a harpy in the wing who went crashing down to the ground. It also drew the attention of the villagers who were now looking to see what hero was saving them that day.
Three harpies swiftly turned and spotted the three of you. With a shriek, they started diving toward you. Katy nocked another arrow, Shangqi raised his fists, but you beat them to the kill. You opened your mouth and screamed, your power slamming into the harpies and making them stumble in flight. You kept screaming until one by one they all fell to the ground, blood pouring from their eyes, ears, and mouth. You stopped screaming when they hit the ground and straightened up. Just as you were about to say how easy it was, the harpy from earlier rose up and flew towards you. Shangqi quickly slammed a ring into its head, the ring cracking its skull and sending the harpy to her death before it returned to his forearm.
The villagers quietly, slowly approached the harpies to make sure they were dead before their eyes landed on you. You wondered how they felt about three people in weird clothes suddenly appearing and killing monsters. The three of you remained perfectly quiet as you tried to assess the situation and how they were going to react. At first, they were whispering to each other, eyes never leaving you before their group started to part down the middle. Walking down the middle in white with a red sash covering her eyes, a woman was seen smiling as she approached, stopping just in front of the harpies’ corpses.
“It seems the Broken One has returned,” She said, her face pointed in your direction which led you to believe she meant you.
“That’s kind of aggressive,” Katy said, as whispers grew and ‘Broken One’ was being repeated like a never-ending echo among the people.
“The Broken One from long ago has returned home,” the woman repeated. “I’m sure this was not the welcome you were hoping for.”
“Who are you?” Shangqi asked her.
“A person no more excited than what approaches.”
You wondered if that meant your father was approaching, but it couldn’t be. You heard what sounded like an army of footsteps, but then you saw ears appear behind the woman and a panting noise. Suddenly, leaping over the woman, a massive white wolf with bright blue eyes was in the air, soaring over the harpies. Before any of you could do anything, you were on the ground, the wolf on top of you, its paws on your shoulders. Katy was screaming, and Shangqi was about to hit the wolf when he noticed it wasn’t biting you -- but licking your face.
“What is happening?!” You shouted as you turned your head away to avoid drowning in wolf saliva. “What the fuck is this!?”
“This is amazing,” Katy started laughing when she realized you weren’t in danger. Shangqi even breathed a sigh in relief when he realized this massive creature was anything from violent as it started to nuzzle you, whimper, and slam its bodyweight down on top of you as it continued to lick your face.
“Why is this happening?!” You shouted, not getting any answers so far.
“White Wolf is yours,” the woman explained calmly. “Laurel, the White Wolf of Alejandra.”
This was strange. The only White Wolf you knew of was the overbearing super-soldier who occasionally gave you blood to keep you from dying an untimely death. Then there were these names, Laurel, Alejandra -- which seemed to be you, thanks to the quick deduction. It was bizarre to hear a name given to you that wasn’t what you had known all this time.
Laurel finally let up, climbing off of you and sitting on her haunches expectantly. You pursed your lips as you reached out to scratch under her jaw, surprised when she leaned in and nuzzled your palm. You looked around her to address the woman from earlier, but she was gone, and now the villagers were surrounding and studying the three of you.
“Am I high?” You asked out loud, looking up at Shangqi who was still trying to see where that woman had run off to.
“I….I don’t know,” he confessed as he helped you to stand up. “But this is getting a little creepy.”
“Yeah…” Katy stood closer to you, watching Laurel carefully as the wolf eyed her. “Can we, uh, get going?”
As though she understood Katy’s request, Laurel quickly got behind you, nudged your backside, and quickly got back in front of you to walk forward and lead the way. You were all of three steps in before there was another gust of wind. Instead of a card, this time was a tall, lithe man in a white toga with red and gold trim. His helmet was gold with white, feathered wings sprouting from the sides of it. He wore a grin on his face, blonde curls falling out of the helmet and framing it as his eyes met yours.
“It’s about time you got here! I almost thought I’d have to kidnap you myself. Well, you’re on the right track, just follow that road, up the hill on the sparkly rainbow bridge, and into the clouds. If you’ve passed the clouds, you’ve gone too far, see you there!” He explained quickly before turning on his heel. He cooed at Laurel, scratched her ears, and called her a good girl before disappearing in another gust of wind.
Shangqi threw his arms up in the air, “Was that fucking Hermes for real!?”
“You know what? I’ll say it. This is weirder than Morris, so much weirder, and he didn’t have a face!” Katy exclaimed as you stepped over the harpy bodies and continued your journey to Mount Olympus.
preview: ShangChi soulmate! AU | SHANGCHI X F!Asian!Reader
Warnings: angst, killing/murder, mild language, mentions of death, movie spoilers
Pairing: Shangchi x Asian F!Reader
Preview: The bond between soulmates is sacred, cherished and revered. Shangchi had witnessed it with his own eyes as a young boy. His mother and father had been soulmates. Not lovers. Not husband and wife. Soulmates-- A bond that ran so deep and permanent it was honored above all others.
Following the death of his mother and after particularly grueling days of training, he’d let his imagination run wild and he’d dream of her-- whoever she was. What life would be like-- could be like when he found her. What kind of person would she be? How would he meet her?
Unshed tears stung his eyes. There was a darkness in him since he lost his mother, and it threatened to swallow him whole on a daily basis. He fought against it with all of his might, but the struggle was difficult. He clung to these dreams like a buoy in the sea of loneliness, rage and despair he felt. He couldn’t dwell on thoughts of his mother, there was no bringing her back. He had to look forward.
“I’ll find you,” he promised himself as his eyelids began to feel heavy and sleep beckoned.
OH- maybe 21 for the prompt lists? It sounds so soft.💖🖤
It’s traditional for the first thing I write for a new character to be extremely soft 😌
21. cuddling in the first morning light
Intimate moments
Shang-Chi was woken first by the harsh blaring of his alarm clock, then again ten minutes later by the scratching of your key and the sound of the front door creaking open. It was the latter sound that made him blink his bleary eyes open, squinting against the early morning sunlight that peeked through the gap in the curtains.
Staring up at the ceiling as he listened to you padding around the apartment, he sighed deeply. You were just getting home from your night shift and in fifteen minutes he would have to leave for his own work; by the time he got home, you would have already left for your next night shift. He found himself missing your company already, knowing that he would be coming home to an empty apartment once again.
The bedroom door creaked open and your face appeared, lined by exhaustion; your eyes still creased with a smile when you saw that he was awake.
“Morning,” you whispered, slipping your rucksack off your aching shoulders and dropping it at the foot of the bed. Your eyes were already drooping, your mind already half asleep, but you still stepped over towards him when he sat up on the edge of the bed and opened his arms to you.
“How was your shift?” he murmured, slipping his arms around your waist and letting his head fall against your belly.
You smiled softly, running your fingers through his sleep-ruffled hair before resting your hands on his broad, bare shoulders.
“Long.” You felt him lean further into you and you chuckled tiredly, poking his shoulders. “C’mon, you. Your turn to work, my turn to sleep.”
He groaned dramatically and you stepped away to let him get out of bed.
Your bedroom was hushed as Shang-Chi dressed in his valet uniform and you slipped out of your scrubs and into your pyjamas. There was something intimate about going through your opposing morning routines together, you getting ready for bed and your boyfriend getting ready for work. You were like ships in the night, passing each other by for just a few precious minutes of your day, and you both cherished every second- leaning sleepily on each other in the tiny bathroom to brush your teeth, handing each other their clothes just to brush your fingers against each other’s, smiling softly whenever your eyes met.
When you slipped into bed, the sheets were still pleasantly warm from being occupied by Shang-Chi all night. Your body all but melted into the mattress, your mind almost asleep before your head even hit the pillow, but you used your last ounce of energy to stretch your arms out to your boyfriend.
“D’you have time to cuddle?” you asked hopefully, his figure already blurry to your tired eyes. You heard his answering chuckle then felt the mattress dip beneath his weight as he sat against the headboard, his legs on top of the blankets.
“Yeah, I do.”
You smiled as your eyes drifted shut to the feeling of him drawing you closer, your head resting on his thigh as you slung your arm over his legs and cuddled into his warmth. You felt his fingers tracing slow, soft circles onto your forearm, lulling you to sleep.
“Love you,” you mumbled, your voice muffled by his skin and slurred by your impending sleep.
“Love you too,” he replied quietly, knowing by the soft whistle of your breathing that you were already sound asleep.
He stayed in his place for another few minutes, ensuring that you were truly asleep and enjoying the brief moments of your company that would have to last him until the next morning. The clock caught his eye and he sighed, knowing that he had to leave you.
Carefully slipping out from under you and gently lowering your head onto the pillow, tucking the blankets up around you, he bent to kiss your forehead sweetly.
“Love you,” he whispered again, before grabbing his rucksack and heading for the door.
He was going to be late for work, but it was worth it.
I can’t stop thinking about Shang-Chi and coming up with little drabbles and scenarios in my head XD

The first time you saw the fireworks together, you were 26. Both of you meeting for the first time at a New Years party your common friend Katy had dragged you to. You had spoken a lot that night, sharing drinks and making sure Katy didn’t do anything stupid. When the first fireworks went off, you were standing outside, each of you holding up a drunkenly seranading Katy and sharing amused smiles.
“Happy New Year, Shaun.”, you toasted over to him.
“Happy New Year, Y/N”, he toased back.

The second time you saw fireworks together was just a few months later during Chinese New Years. You bumped into each other by accident this time, as you were out with your family.
“Hey, wanna join me for some red dates?”, you asked him, not wanting the meeting to end yet.
He was surprised, but nodded, following you to the next vendor and sharing a bag with you, while talking into the early morning hours.

The third time you saw the fireworks together, you were both 27, hanging out as best friends at yet another New Years party and babysitting Katy, who was constantly going on about how you two were so cute together. The two of you blushed and smiled, eyes quickly going up to the colorful display above your heads.
“You two are so hopeless.”, was Katy’s comment before she swayed back inside for more drinks.

The fourth time you saw the fireworks together, you were standing in Shaun’s arms, enjoying the warmth your boyfriend’s body gave you during that cold winter night. As the spectacle ended, you turned around and gave him one more kiss, welcoming the new year in the best way possible.
“I love you.”, you heard him whisper and you returned the confession wholeheartedly.

The fifth time you saw the fireworks together was with your family. Your parents loved Shaun, so did your siblings. Your grandmother had even started planning your wedding to which Shaun always laughed and just nodded, assuring the old lady that he would have no other wedding planner if it came to it. That night, Shaun seemed particularly pensive staring at the fireworks.
“What’s wrong?”, you wanted to know.
“Nothing, I’m just overwhelmed.” You cocked your head to the side, silently asking for more details. “I never thought I’d experience family like this again. But with you, I can. Thank you, Y/N.” He sounded absolutely sincere and your heart swelled with love for him.

The sixth time you saw the fireworks together, you were celebrating with your family again. After a large family dinner and some board games, you went outside and welcomed another year together. Your second year as a couple, yet it felt like so much longer. You turned around and cuddled into him.
“You won’t see the fireworks that way.”; he pointed out with a laugh.
“I’m seeing something much better this way.”, you replied and felt him hug you closer.

The seventh time you saw the fireworks together, Shaun surprised you by getting down on one knee. As colorful fire flowers bloomed all around you in the sky, the man you loved professed his love for you in front of all of your friends. Before you even had a chance to reply, Katy jumped in, hugging both of you and squeeing like a maniac.
Of course you said yes that night, the feeling of the silver band on your finger still utterly overwhelming.
“I can’t wait to spend every New Years with you from now on.”, you told him with a kiss.

The eight time you saw the fireworks together, you were traveling for the first time. Shaun had taken you to see his sister and while the Ten Rings compound was intimidating, it was the perfect spot for a private pyro show.
“I’ve never seen fireworks like that.”, you marveled at the dragon forming in the sky.
“I don’t think anyone has.”, Shaun stated, looking as amazed as yourself.
“Of course not. You Americans and your generic fireworks.”, Xialing observed with a small grin, sipping her drink.

The ninth time you saw the fireworks together, you were officially Shaun’s wife. You had married in spring time, but it still felt like your honeymoon phase. He still looked at you, as if you were the best thing that ever happened to him and you still felt the butterflies go crazy in your stomach whenever you felt his fingers brush your skin.
“Let’s go home:”, you said in the early morning hours.
“Already giving up?”, he aksed with a laugh, putting down his glas.
“No, but I have plans with my husband.”; you whispered coyly into his ear. How could he say no to that?
___________
The tenth time you saw the fireworks together, it wasn’t just the two of you anymore. There was a tiny bundle resting in Shaun’s arms, as you leaned against the man you loved more than you could explain.
“I can’t believe he is sleeping through all that.”, Shaun marveled at his son, who didn’t seem bothered by the noise at all.
You laughed and looked down at your child. “We are lucky he is such a heavy sleeper.”
“I would feel lucky even if he wasn’t.”, Shaun stated. “I am so grateful to have both of you.” You kissed again, knowing that there would be many many more fireworks to come.
