Shape from shading(陰影による凸凹知覚) このブロックの表面は本当は平べったい けれど(触ってみてね),凸凹しているように 見えるよ。図形の暗いところは影,明るいところは 光が当たっているように判断してしまうから でこぼこして見えるの! この図形に光があたる方向の情報がないと, 視覚系は凸凹の様子を判断できません。 印刷されたものなど,はっきりしない場合は, だいたい「上」から光が当たっているとして凸凹が判断されます。

Shape from shading (Unevenness of perception as shading) The surface of this toy block is actually flat (let’s touch it!), but it appears bumpy. Your eyes judge that the figure of the dark part is shadow and blight part gets the lighting, so it looks bumpy! This figure cannot give you the judgment of appearance of bumpiness without the lighting direction of the information.
