49ers Sign Chris Cook and Shareece Wright to One Year Deals

The 49ers lost both Perrish Cox and Chris Culliver to free agency, then turned around and signed DB’s Chris Cook and Shareece Wright to one year deals.

Cook played for the 49ers last season, but his season was cut short due to injury. Shareece Wright comes over from the Chargers, where he has been a starter the past two seasons.

49ers have signed former Chargers CB Shareece Wright

Today the San Francisco 49ers continue to replenish their secondary. The team signed former San Diego Chargers cornerback Shareece Wright.

San Diego Chargers Evaluations: Defensive Backs

The following is an evaluation of the San Diego Chargers Defensive Backs, including the Corners and Safety position groups. The Defensive Backs were the most maligned group for the Chargers in the 2013 season.

Shareece Wright had himself a decent season, even though he missed 3 games. He was clearly the best CB on the Chargers. Steve Williams had some good moments in the preseason, but a pectoral injury ended his season before it began. He was looking to be the Chargers Nickle Corner before the injury. Richard Marshall was brought in after he was cut from Miami and he played reasonably well. Crezdon Butler also made some plays for the Chargers after he was signed in September. Marcus Cromartie was in reserve for the Chargers the entire season. Derek Cox was a disaster in his only season for the Chargers, and he has already been cut.

Wright is a solid player to have in your secondary, but he's not an elite Corner that can take Number 1 Wide Receivers all game long. Richard Marshall does not have a contract for next year, but Williams, Butler, and Cromartie are all under contract for next season. The Chargers are expected to address their Corners in both the NFL Draft and Free Agency.

Safeties

Eric Weddle was somewhat restricted by the lack of talent around him in the secondary, and his play slipped just a little bit from the 2012 season because for the majority of the season he couldn't be the jack of all trades that he usually is for the Chargers. By the end of the season, when Pagano introduced his Nickle package heavy Defense, Weddle was his same old play making self. Marcus Gilchrist was both a Safety and a CB for the Chargers in 2013, and his versatility helped improve the Defense late in the season. Jahleel Addae is a hard working young defender, and all he needs to become a better Safety is more snaps and seasoning. Darrell Stuckey was the special teams captain, a core player for that unit, and he was solid in his role on Defense. He's already resigned for the next 4 years. Brandon Taylor was a reserve Safety for the Chargers. All of the Safeties for the Chargers are under contract for the next season.
