It was cool for my kids and I to stumble upon artist Shayne Dark installing his work at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. They magically sat patiently and I got to have a little chat about matte blue and modern art. Those photos have no filter and it's just painted wood - the pigment just glows when the light hits it! Then when we got home we made a painting based (loosely) on what we saw.

Shayne Dark’s exhibition at the Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens, Natural Conditions, was on view May 22 through October 4, 2015. Dark (Canadian, born 1952) is known for using locally sourced and natural elements such as branches, limbs, roots, and tree trunks to create surreal and astounding sculptures. His work prizes nature as inspiration for his abstract and colorful forms. Situating Dark’s monumental works in and around the Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens’ Lord & Burnham–designed conservatory, itself nestled within a landscape originally crafted by Frederick Law Olmsted, provided a remarkable opportunity to harness the Gardens’s existing natural drama. Dark’s striking use of bold color is meant to complement and enhance the organic surroundings, bringing art and nature together in a magnificent and harmonious display.
