Hybrid Modernism. Churches in Kerala by Haubitz-Zoche

Photographer Stefanie Zoche of Haubitz-Zoche has captured a series of vibrant images showcasing the “hybrid modernism” churches of the Southern Indian region of Kerala. The images below, also available on the artist’s website, depict the blend of modernist influences and local architectural elements that defined many Indian churches following the country’s 1947 independence.

As Zoche explains, the post-independence Indian church establishment sought to differentiate itself from the historic colonial building style, and hence drew inspiration from the modernist icon Le Corbusier. The buildings in Zoche’s gallery often display an “effusively sculptural formal language and a use of intense color” with Christian symbols “directly transposed into a three-dimensional, monumental construction design.”

Infra Realism by Kate Ballis

Australian photographer Kate Ballis has toured Palm Springs with an infrared camera and coloured filters to produce these images, which show the muted desert city in lucid purple, pink and red tones. Melbourne-based Ballis created the Infra Realism series to offer alternative views of Palm Springs’ famed mid-20th century architecture, having captured its vistas many times previous.

Danielle Clough Transforms Vintage Rackets Into Her Canvas for Floral Embroidery Designs

Cape Town based artist Danielle Clough (previously featured here) is a photographer, designer, VJ and embroiderer. She graduated from art direction and graphic design from The Red and Yellow School before pursuing visual art and digital design professionally. Her inquisitive nature constantly leads her to experiment with new mediums and explore street culture. In this feature, the artist takes colorful yarn and turns vintage tennis rackets into a frame to hold her bright bouquets.

Fay Jones Timothy Hursley

Euine Fay Jones was an American architect and designer. An apprentice of Frank Lloyd Wright during his professional career, Jones is the only one of Wright’s disciples to have received the AIA Gold Medal (1990), the highest honor awarded by the American Institute of Architects. His Thorncrown Chapel was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2000, only 20 years after it was built, in recognition of its architectural significance.

Jones used Frank Lloyd Wright’s principles but made unique buildings. Jones’ most famous buildings are the Thorncrown Chapel in Eureka Springs, Arkansas (images 8-10); the Mildred B. Cooper Memorial Chapel in Bella Vista (images 3-5), Arkansas, the Pinecote Pavilion at the Crosby Arboretum in Picayune (images1-2), Mississippi, and the Garvan Garden Pavilion in Hot Springs, Arkansas. Also included in this photoset; Pine Eagle Chapel (image 6) and Skyrose Chapel (image 7). These buildings are simple and transcendental creations of wood. [text via]
