* New Text from Sylus *
My phone buzzes with the newest message from a certain Onychinus leader, and my boredom from sitting at the newest Hunter's meeting stops abruptly when I see the name illuminate the background of my screen. I hadn't seen Sylus since exchanging those bracelets from the Charon district with him, but the current bracelet is pressing with promise on my racing pulse point.
Sylus: You may find a little surprise in your tree tonight.
I bite my lip, anticipating this conversation to go very differently, especially when it's so close to Christmas, but I feel generous enough to indulge him. My fingertips dance across the keyboard when Captain Jenna's monologue comes to another introductory point.
MC: What type of surprise?
Sylus: A fluffy type ;)
I pause, my eyebrows shooting directly upwards. Whatever I had expected, it had not been that.
MC: ? What do you mean fluffy?
The bastard has the gull to leave me on delivered, the chat bubble appearing and then disappearing. I panic, suddenly seeing the alert on my security system's detection system that Daddy Sylus had entered my living room at 12:13 AM. I roll my eyes, trying to conceal the scoff that so badly wants to escape my lips. Of course, he uses even the damn security system to mock me. I ignore the rising burst of feeling that sunshines through my chest, the warmth there stealing my attention from work entirely.
MC: Sylus why are you leaving me on read?
It's incredible, how in the few months of knowing this man, he has found new and record-setting ways of making my blood pressure rise. I think about opening the cameras but fall short of doing so when typing his last name sporadically into my phone under the desk, like some misbehaving student in high school.
MC: SYLUS?
SYLUS HAS SENT A PHOTO
Whatever I had expected to open, it wasn't anywhere close to what I found in my folder. For there are two bright, star-filled eyes belonging to the most adorable creature looking up at me.
Sylus: Surprise, kitten. Heard from a very smart someone long ago that when in lonesome, you get a kitten. The cat's out of the bag.
My jaw is on the ground, and I don't even care if I look like a crazy person, not when there is a living, breathing kitten in my Christmas tree. Not when the small baby looks like it is just begging for cuddles, and the deja vu that radiates through my heart is so familiar that it makes the moment feel so much more real. There was a tug on the bond between us, caused entirely by the rift in my heart, where Sylus answers to my call.
MC: Very smart this someone is indeed. Promise me you'll be home when I meet the little one? I'll have to file for the adoption papers.
I shouldn't be smiling as much as I have been, but I couldn't help it. I felt so warm that it threatened to break the winter outside.
Sylus: Papers already done. Fuzzball's name is Kaida, it seemed to fit her and her fiery little personality. Much like a certain Miss Hunter.
It is curiosity that has me seeking the search engine on my phone, looking for the original meaning behind the name Kaida. Its meaning pops up just as Sylus' final message of that evening pings through.
Kaida meant 'little dragon.' Something in me drips and bleeds at those two words, falling into the recesses of my imagination and catapulting, like this was something my heart was bred to understand but fate had blocked it from doing so. I knew I was warmer than I have ever been, now.
Sylus: Oh, and one last small detail about those adoption papers. it's unchangeable, by the way.
MC: Do I even want to know? Sylus: I'm sure anybody would want to know who the father of their kitten is but we can keep it a secret, sweetie ;)
MC: SYLUS ARE YOU FUCKING SERIOUS MC: We're not even married and suddenly we have a child :/
