enjoyed an old interactive program CD in the midnight on MacOS 6 driven by #SheepShaver on Mac mini M-1. Along the endless road of fiddling around with old computer games and programs via emulation, my thoughts began bending back to a destination I'd touched on before. It wouldn't be long until The Digital Antiquarian got to 1993; he might cover the CD-ROM game Myst, and that coverage might even be positive. While I don't often "play along" with the games that site visits, I could imagine making an exception in this particular case. The only problem was that as I contemplated doing that...

After an embarrassing amount of effort, I was able to set up an emulator to run Mac OS 9. I can stream all my old Mac games now! Time to educate y’all about the magic of early-to-mid-90s Shareware games!

Mind if I ask how you're playing all these Mac games? Is there an emulator for Windows?

Sure! I’m using a program called SheepShaver, which is part of a group of Macintosh emulators for Windows/Mac/Linux. It can be tricky because you need both a ROM file and a copy of the OS you plan to run.

SheepShaver is for running PowerPC-based Macs, Mac OS 7 through 9. The other two big ones are Mini vMac (which emulates earliest, black-and-white versions) and Basilisk II (versions 7 through 8 basically). Check out E-Maculation for information about setting them up. That site has great documentation… and basically the only documentation.

As far as the ROM files, there are two types: Old World (generally for use with older versions of the operating system) and New World (usually PowerPCs, for use with SheepShaver). These are technically illegal unless you’ve obtained them from an actual Macintosh, so unfortunately I can’t really link to them.

I've spent three hours trying to get a mac classic emulator (sheepshaver specifically) set up just so I can play Oregon Trail II, only to get a weird quicktime error message that I can't seem to fix.
