"You'll call, right? As soon as you get there?" Dean asked, feeling the lingering heat from Baby's hood seep through his jeans as he looked over at Cas.
"It's two hours away, Dean. And it's just a couple of rouge demons. I'll meet you and Sam by the morning," Cas said, gaze lingering on Dean's face before flittering off towards the setting sun.
"You don't have to go alone, you know?" Dean said. The ache in his gut was starting to creep up his throat. Anytime Cas left, the feeling rose higher until it felt like it was suffocating him.
"I'll be fine. Besides, aren't you supposed to be meeting Sam to handle the witches?" Cas pointed out.
Yeah, he definitely was. But something about splitting up to handle different hunts made Dean feel uneasy. Maybe because he didn't like Cas leaving. But how could he voice the words to ask Cas to stay?
"Yeah, alright. But you'll call, right? If you need backup and-"
"And when I get there, yes Dean, I'll call. You do remember I'm an Angel, right? Handled a lot worse than a couple demons," Cas said, a hint of teasing coating his words.
"An Angel with a habit of forgetting to charge his phone," Dean shot back playfully, nudging his knee against Cas' before he pushed off from the hood. "Also, you owe me a burger tomorrow." He tossed the empty wrapper at Cas' head- the wrapper from the burger Cas had stolen from him before he could take a bite- and rolled his eyes when Cas caught it perfectly before it made contact with his jaw.
"Burgers and pie. The breakfast of champions," Cas grinned.
"You're damn right," Dean said, earlier nerves settling as Cas' smile wiped away the worry. "Alright, see you tomorrow morning?"
"Bright and early with burgers."
"Dumbass," Dean muttered, leaning in and brushing his lips against Cas' in the barest hint of a kiss. There was soft movement against his mouth as Cas kissed him back; tender and gentle. The kiss was chaste yet sweet, leaving Dean a little breathless before they parted on a quiet exhale. They lingered for half a second, lips just barely caressing before Dean pulled away.
Without looking back, Dean moved to the driver's door and climbed into the Impala. If he drove off before Cas did, then it wasn't Cas leaving him. Pushing the car into reverse, he made a quick two-point turn back towards town where Sam was getting the supplies they needed.
Except, he barely made it a few hundred feet down the road before he slammed on the brakes. Violently.
Oh God. Shit.
Did he just-? No. There was no way… had he just kissed Cas goodbye? He reached up, brushing his fingertips over his lips to feel the tingling sensation of Cas lingering across his mouth. He’d kissed his best friend like it was the most natural thing in the world. A move he hadn’t even thought about; just done on impulse as if he kissed Cas everyday. And Cas- Cas had kissed him back. Oh God.
Daring to sneak a peek, Dean cast his eyes to the rearview mirror. Cas hadn’t moved from his position against the bed of his truck. Even from several hundred feet away, Dean could see Cas had his hand pressed to his mouth, the exact same way Dean was tracing over his own lips where Cas’ had been pressed just moments ago.
The ache in his gut burst into a sharp stab of longing, and, without thinking, Dean spun the car around and headed straight back to Cas. He couldn’t rip the door open fast enough, and he tumbled out of the car and back towards Cas as fast as he could.
“Dean-” Cas started to say, hand dropping from his mouth with a look of surprise and yearning.
“Just- just need-” Dean said, mind racing as his gaze locked onto Cas’ lips, glistening in the last rays of sun. Yes. He surged forwards, pinning Cas back against the pickup as he chased the Angel’s mouth.
Cas gasped against his lips, hands gripping tightly to Dean’s waist as he pulled the hunter closer. Dean aligned their mouths, catching Cas’ lower lip between his own as he leaned further into the kiss. Everything in his body caught fire and yet soothed at the touch, Cas’ lips moving hungrily yet tenderly against his own.
There was a little gasp of pleasure from Cas that Dean chased with his tongue, ever-so-subtly tracing along Cas’ teeth before pulling away again and softening the touch. Gently, Dean moved his hands to cup Cas’ jaw and he titled his head to reconnect their lips again. Cas melted at the touch; knees wobbling as Dean snaked one hand down around the Angel’s back to hold him steady.
Cas leaned up into the touch of Dean’s mouth, gliding his lips along Dean’s so achingly slowly Dean thought he might combust. For a long moment, suspended in time, the entire world shrunk down to the way Cas’ mouth molded to his as they pressed even closer against each other. The kiss broke on a soft sigh, with Cas quickly moving to press another kiss to the corner of Dean’s mouth and then they met in the middle for a last lingering touch.
“Now that’s a goodbye kiss,” Dean murmured against Cas’ mouth, feeling Cas’ smile against his own.
“And what about a hello kiss?” Cas asked, nuzzling his nose against Dean’s.
“You’ll find out tomorrow morning,” Dean grinned, ghosting a final chaste kiss to Cas’ cheek before pulling away.
“Tease,” Cas muttered as Dean walked him towards the driver’s seat of the pickup.
“Hurry back,” Dean replied.
When Cas leaned out the window to press their lips together in another little kiss, Dean lingered in the warmth. This time, when Cas pulled away into the dusk, the only ache Dean felt in his chest was one of wanting to kiss Cas again.

day 1 of @thiscastielhasflown and i's follower celebration
prompt: diners/roadtrip
Twenty-four years ago in Mankato, Minnesota, Dean killed a wendigo with a bottle of Jack and a lighter. He told Cas this, how the flames lit the inside of the cave and his dad had to drag him out because he suddenly couldn’t move, how he stayed silent for a week even though his dad begged him to speak.
Seventeen years ago, in Monte Vista, Colorado, Dean burned the bones of a malevolent spirit that sliced a gash through his chest before he could swing an iron crowbar through her foggy figure. As he and Cas passed by the cemetery where he and his dad had dug up her remains, he could almost picture himself standing between the tombstones, his dad tossing him the lighter. Do the honors.
In Evanston, Wyoming, he and Cas stopped to eat at a diner that looked vaguely familiar. As they sat down at a booth in the back, waitress handing them their menus, it hit him.
“Pretty sure Sam and I went through here before.” He couldn’t remember what they'd been hunting. “Years ago. After dad. You know. Passed.”
And Cas was silent a moment before replying, "I wish I’d known you then."
Then he declared he wanted the French onion soup from the specials of the day, like he hadn’t just spoken Dean's thoughts aloud in his uncanny way of knowing exactly what Dean wished for before Dean knew it himself.
You don't think you deserved to be saved?
He saved me.
It was a nice touch 🖤
