Week 5: In retrospect, this was a bad idea.

Interesting to note this sequence of events:

1) Tech definitely notices Phee patting his shoulder, and doesn't quite seem to know how to react to this.

2) Shep and Phee greet each other with a hug.

3) Wrecker teases Tech about Shep being "competition" for him with Phee.

4) Result

Now, is it just a coincidence that Tech is kinda sorta hugging Phee here, later on the same day he saw Shep and Phee hugging? Probably. Almost certainly.

Do I still find this hilarious? Absolutely 😂

Quick rant about characters’ screentime in "The Bad Batch"

I can't speak for any other TBB fic writers, but I feel like Lyana Hazard plays a decent-sized role in my fics set during or after S3.

This rant isn't about her character specifically. I'm using her as an example for a larger point, so just roll with it for now.

In my fics, Lyana is Omega's friend and confidant. She welcomes Omega and her brothers when they make it back to Pabu between 3.04 / 3.05, and then she helps them integrate into the community after the series finale. She and her dad bring TBB housewarming gifts for their new home. She teaches Omega and her brothers about the island's favorite sports and holidays. She hosts Omega for sleepovers, and they work on various projects together. The two girls are also on good terms with Mox, Deke and Stak, and the five play a lot of games together.

Overall, Lyana doesn't do a ton in my fics, but she does do *some* stuff.

Well, while chatting with @snotbuggle about a separate but related topic, I realized that Lyana is only in FOUR episodes in the entire TBB show:

2.13 "Pabu"

2.14 "Tipping Point"

3.11 "Point of No Return"

3.15 "The Cavalry Has Arrived"

And she only has speaking lines in three of them, because she's just a background cameo in the series finale.

That means she's on par with Cad Bane and Fennec Shand in terms of number of episodes where they talk, and she's tied with Senator Chuchi in terms of total appearances.

I mean, ES-02 -- even if she was only in TBB S1 -- had more total appearances with SIX.

Wow.

Yes, Lyana is mentioned in 3.05 "The Return," but she doesn't appear. In fact, in S3, we have several episodes set completely or partially on Pabu where Lyana feasibly could've and probably should've shown up.

But she DOESN'T.

And what's even crazier is that Lyana is only indirectly mentioned in "The Bad Batch: Sanctuary" novel. You'd think given how important Pabu is to the story that Lyana -- one of like four named people who live there -- would've been mentioned a few times by name.

I can understand an argument that the show is going breakneck speed and has to get a lot done in a very short amount of time, especially in the latter part of S2 and most of S3. That means that some characters will appear very rarely, and even then, it's just to move the plot along.

But that doesn't apply to the "Sanctuary" novel, where they have way more time and space to build up characters like Lyana, Shep and Phee, who are supposedly very important to the Bad Batch in the rest of S2, all of S3 and post-S3.

(At least Phee gets plenty of time to shine in the novel, but I feel like it would've been a great time to flesh out the Hazards more. Nope!)

This goes back to something I was saying a few weeks ago:

I really think so much of what we love about TBB is partially or completely fanon, not canon.

TPTB gave us the bare-bones of concepts and characters, and then just let the fans fill in the blanks.

So many interactions are implied and never actually shown. For instance, we know next to nothing about Echo and Crosshair's dynamic, because they rarely interact in TCW S7 or TBB, especially one-on-one.

Until the "Sanctuary" novel came out, Tech and Phee's situationship was definitely there, but considering they're only in FOUR episodes together, it was much thinner than I think most people realize.

Maybe this is just a ~me problem~ but based on my time in the larger "Star Wars" fandom, but the TCW and TBB pockets especially, I really don't think it is.

In TCW, Echo is only in five episodes before he's resurrected in S7; Boba Fett is only in five episodes total; Barriss and Ahsoka are only in four episodes together before Barriss betrays her in S5; and Maul is only in six episodes before S7.

On the TBB side, the cadets are only in three episodes: 3.02, 3.11 and 3.15, and they don't speak in the latter. Cid has a lot of weight in the show's narrative, but she only physically appears in 11 episodes and that's including three times in S2 when she only appears as a hologram. I know that's more than some characters, but it feels like she appears in more episodes than she actually does.

And -- bringing everything full circle -- Shep, Lyana and Phee only have on-screen conversations in one TBB episode: 2.13 "Pabu." We really know next to nothing about Phee and the Hazards' dynamic beyond that episode. We see them talking in the background in the series finale, but we don't hear the conversation. It's just a quick cameo.

Granted, a lot of the TCW characters got much more screentime in other shows, books, comics and games, helping to flesh them out more than TCW did on its own.

And, I know that it's not necessarily about how many episodes a character is in or how many minutes of screentime they get. It's about what you do with it, and how much of an impression it leaves on the audience.

Fair enough.

Boba Fett has *maybe* 10 minutes of screentime in the original trilogy, but he's been a fan favorite for decades just because of how ~cool~ he was. His design, his voice, his aura... It was enough that there were plenty of books and comics about him way before the prequels ever came out.

I'm just saying: A lot of times, fanon gives a lot of concepts, characters and dynamics way more thought and development than canon ever did.

And they're allowed to. People can and should go ham when writing fics or making fan art -- because I'm definitely in that category too. (I mean, what am I going to do? Not include Lyana in my fics, just because she didn't appear very much in the TBB canon?)

I just think we might need to do better about remembering what's canon and what's fanon, and calibrate our approach to certain things accordingly.

I’d love a short about Omega being a teenager on Pabu — and she’s just a normal teenager dealing with puberty, hormones, normal teenage melodrama, and her brothers just being so embarrassing and the absolute worst!

Hunter is also there, but he’s having a protracted anxiety attack and existential crisis because what happened to his sweet, curious, and compassionate (and mildly chaotic) little sister?

Crosshair and Wrecker get to be the peanut gallery and provide updates on this family drama to Echo. (He thinks it’s hysterical.) The only reasons they avoided Hunter’s meltdown are because they found Tech’s notes about what to expect during human puberty and because they actually listened to Shep about the eventual pitfalls of parenting a teenager.

Today I was thinking about my idol from season 3, CX-2, again.

Although he is a negative character, he opposes the main characters and does nothing but prevent them from living in peace, but I still laugh every time from the moments when he openly shows with his whole appearance and meaningful silence how he doesn't care about the words of others😅 Just look at how he unceremoniously interrupts Shep and shuts him up, and how he ignores Wolffe's orders. And how he harshly threatens Shep that his island will burn... Terrifying 😱 I can't, I just love this asshole, honestly, I'm ready to review season 3 purely because of him😏

No matter what anyone says, but for me, this is the most charismatic clone assassin of all those featured in the series. And even though he's a rare asshole, he's my favorite character in season 3.

Hunter had not expected to be so interested in trying belly dancing after seeing the single male dancer performing on the street in Pabu. Nor had he expected Shep to eagerly encourage him to take lessons when he noticed him staring. And least of all, did he expect to love it. Yet, he did. And he had Shep to thank for it. Which was why he was all too eager to give the Mayor a private dance. Though, if the way Shep was watching him, he doubted that their evening would end when the dance did…..
