Fʀᴏsᴛ Gʟɪᴅᴇ [Ros & Sherlock]

— Nnnope. Nope. Bye.

— Wait- That's the whole point of a ball! Dancing!

The darkness of night hides Ros' blush as she speed walks away the dancefloor, effort and embarrassment warming her face. Not far behind is Sherlock, pride hurt at her fast rejection.

— Why did you even attend a ball if you're planning to sit all night!?

— Shut up!! It's not like I had a choice! A normie like you wouldn't understand... I just wanted to catch up with Idia and call it a night...

Each step Sherlock takes to be by her side, Ros swirls and changes course. If he ups the speed to reach her, she'll stop and turn and throw off his pace. Almost like a dance, the way they turn and spin without reaching one another.

— Im doing you a favour! It's bad optics to not be asked to dance in these events. Even if you're.. you, you're still a noble.

Awkwardness turns to bitterness at once. Ros turns once more, this time to glare at Sherlock in such a way he stops in his tracks.

— No one else cares! My sisters do all the looking good in public stuff, so it's fine if I don't. I'd be worse if I tried to dance in front of everyone... Some new-rich brat like you wouldn't get it.

Crossing her arms, Ros looks as if hugging herself as her ears drop. Mixed with the crease on her brow on her face, it sends pangs to Sherlock's heart. There's a feeling building up inside, one he isn't used to and can't quite name, but that compels his mouth to speak without thinking.

— I... I wanted to dance with you.

The air is thick, and the silence hangs heavier than lead. Honest as he was, Sherlock avoids her eyes now, mirroring Ros own avoidant gaze. Well, if the cat is out of the bag, might as well go all the way. Sherlock was raised many things, but a coward certainly wasn't one.

— I admit it! I don't actually care if anyone sees! I wanted to dance with you! Why is it so hard for you to understand how I feel!? Ros I l-

— NONONO NO YOU PUT THAT SENTENCE BACK IN YOUR MOUTH!

— What sentence!? I didn't get to say it!

— I DON'T WANNA HEAR IT!!

The pacing starts once more. The music is much too far away to enjoy, but this dance is not one that follows any tempo. Not the music, and not his feelings, as long as Ros doesn't hear any of them she can keep pretending nothing is happening. So Ros covers her ears as she paces, thought it does little to handicap her hearing. And hear she does, when the steel click of Sherlock's shoes stops following her.

— So it's a no. You're rejecting me. That's fine, as long as we're clear.

— What? Wait! That's not what I- I didn't say that! It's...

Now it's Sherlock's turn to cross his arms. Perhaps he is lying to himself, but he swears he sees panic in Ros eyes. As quickly as he sees it, it's gone, a grimace on her face as she searches for the right words. It takes much too long, and with a few strides Sherlock closes the distance between them. His eye twitches as it looks into Ros' avoidant ones.

— You know, you're driving me insane like this.

— You!? How do you think I feel!?

— That's what I've been asking you!!

Expensive gloves run through silver hair in frustration. Sherlock resists the urge to pinch his face, else risk to smudge his make up. It doesn't matter how long he stares at Ros, he's unable to decipher what's on her mind. The fidgeting of her hands with her sleeves could be nervousness, being uncomfortable, bored, aggravated- No answer escapes him, except when it comes to her, and oh how he hates feeling as if he's being played.

— Look...

Ros pitch is high at first, then after a deep breath goes back to usual.

— I... I can't tell you... I can't give you an answer. I don't really know how I feel.

Ros shuts her eyes expecting yelling, a snark remark, something bad. She's read enough forums to know how this goes. And yet all she hears is a soft laugh, a defeated one, as Sherlock touches his forehead.

— And I can't figure it out for you. I've tried. So what now?

There's no anger, no resentment, no frustration. Ros is left puzzled at the acceptance she finds in front of her. Patient eyes look at her, and the thought of those eyes growing tired and looking elsewhere makes her chest feel tight, but so does the idea of Sherlock doting and showing her off as his partner, in public, thousand of eyes on them-

It's only then that Ros realises how far away they are from the main dancefloor. On the sidelines that give way to what once where pillars and rooms. An idea strikes.

— I... I wouldn't hate dancing with you. Here! Where there's no one watching... A-as a favour!

Eyes downcast, Ros can't help but jump when Sherlock gently takes her hand. There's a smirk on his face, a small smile filled of emotions Ros will keep pretending she can't see, and he prepares to lead.

— Shall we?
