7 Superfoods that Boost Brain Health
Let’s face it, we all know what we put in our body’s we get out, so why do so many of us eat in a way that doesn’t support our health? Certain foods are superfoods. They can boost different organs or systems within our body and if you’re like me, the brain is one organ the could always use a boost.
Food often affects every action our body performs from our memory to our energy level and even mood. Have you ever experienced “brain fog” often used to describe forgetfulness, confusion, and lack of attention. This easily overlooked condition can be a real downer. Luckily its simple to clean the mind of “brain fog” if your willing to pay more attention to the food you eat rather than the calories you consume.
Focus on consuming nutrient-dense foods to help your brain performance thrive. Below are 7 super-foods, begin incorporating them into your diet and see the difference in your concentration level.
Walnuts
Go nuts for nuts! Especially walnuts which are excellent for our nervous system and brain health. You’ll find a great source of omega three fatty acids; walnuts also contain high levels of Vitamin E, which has been linked to preventing forms of dementia by protecting against free radical damage in the brain. Raw nuts are fine but to super charge them, it is best to let them soak overnight, which makes them easier to digest.
Celery
A rich source of luteolin, celery is full of this compound that research shows lowers rates of age-related memory loss by calming inflammation in the brain, which scientists and doctors believe to be the primary cause of neuro-degeneration. Next time you need a supercharged snack grab those celery sticks instead of something processed from the vending machine.
Bee Pollen
A spoon full of honey makes the medicine go down. Well actually that spoon full of honey may just be the “medicine” itself since the wide range of naturally occurring nutrients found in bee pollen are found to be energizing. Bee pollens are chocked full of free amino acids, folic acid, and are often around forty percent protein which all help to enhance our brain’s stamina and fight of fatigue. When you really need a brain boost, skip that cup of coffee and blend up a delicious smoothie with a teaspoon of bee pollen.
Sunflower & Pumpkin Seeds
With both containing an excellent mix of omega fatty acids, B vitamins, and protein—sunflower and pumpkin seeds will boost your energy levels. Also containing tryptophan, which the brain converts into serotonin combatting anxiety and eases depression. Finally, grabbing for that handful of seeds will give you your daily recommended dose of zinc, which I’m guessing you could be missing. Zinc is linked to enhancing thinking skills and memory.
Dark Chocolate
Yep I said chocolate! But not all chocolate is created equal, which is why we need to be very careful when picking out varieties to boost our brain function. Look for quality, dark chocolate if your looking to stick to the HEALTH benefits this superfood can provide. Rich in iron, magnesium and fiber; which work to improve blood flow to the brain coincidently improving memory and cognitive functioning. One of the most powerful antioxidants in the world, cacao surprisingly contains 15x more powerful antioxidants than blueberries. Before you get to excited and grab that Snickers bar, watch yourself! Look for the good stuff, organic dark chocolate with AT LEAST 70% cacao.
Coconut Oil
Well oiled-machines our bodies our, with the brain being made up of 60% fat. Think low fat levels are GOOD for your health? Think again. The trick is incorporating good, “healthy” fats like coconut oil which aids in raising good cholesterol, combatting dementia and weight loss. Acting as an anti-inflammatory, coconut oil has been known to help prevent the onset of brain disorders.
