Develop A Pro-Aging Mindset
With each year comes a birthday to celebrate and a decision to either cringe at the idea or to celebrate. Why not Celebrate?! “Age” should not be a limiting factor in life, health, or anyone’s overall well being. When it comes to aging gracefully, there are many factors that come into play. Focus on not only eating healthy, exercising and hydrating—but ultimately creating a new mindset.
Pro-aging is a mindset which embraces making the most of the age you are! Feel it in your Body, Mind & Soul. If your like me and like to set goals and learn new things, this mindset will resonate with you. Here are a few of my tips for finding your fierce self.
Body
If your looking to develop a pro-aging mindset, you need to keep an eye on each nibble. Think about more than, “what would taste good” instead think “is this the fuel my body needs to operate at it’s best?” Place purpose behind what you eat. You’ve heard about the benefits of fruits and vegetables? They are more than just good for you. Antioxidants found in leafy greens, tomatoes, and blueberries —just to name a few —help stop molecules that damage normal cells. Remember, five to nine servings of fruits and veggies a day!
In addition to eating fruits and vegetables, whole grains rich in fiber such as oats, barley, quinoa, wheat, and brown rice keep your blood vessels in excellent condition and lowers your chance of developing type 2 diabetes. Fish contains Omega-3 fatty acids, look for salmon, lake trout, and tuna which have high levels of pro-aging benefits. Omega-3 fatty acids also protect your heart and lower chances of a stroke. If you don’t like fish, purchase Omega-3 capsules in your local grocery store.
Mind
There are hundreds of studies showing how exercise aids in gaining stamina and muscle strength, in addition to bone density, which can decrease with age. Who knew that it also does incredible things for our minds! Exercise changes the brain in a unique way that protects memory and thinking skills. Exercise helps to improve our mood, sleep and reduces stress, all of which keep our minds strong.
Another factor that impacts our brain is sleep. It’s no joke, sleep is vital to survival, and it helps the nervous system function properly. Seven or more hours a night is recommended in order for our brains to function at peak performance. If your getting less than six hours you may irritable and get sick more frequently. Recent studies are starting to reveal how brain cells and chemicals work together to regulate sleep and changes that take place in the brain when a person is sleep-deprived.
Soul
Today's world is stressful. Yoga offers freedom from boundaries that limit us by focusing on ways of looking after your-self better to increase vitality, find serenity, and get the best out of each day.
