My brain mulled over the idea of Ship Figureheads and gargoyles. Though traditional gargoyles are more architectural and roof gutters, they both have become decorative symbols of places. One being more land locked the other on the sea. Also there are just as much variety of figureheads as there are gargoyle designs.
ALSO REMEMBERED DRAGON HEAD FIGURE HEADS FROM VIKING SHIPS!!! (pattern seeking monkey brain saw more gargoyle-dragon connection and went brrrr)
Then I think the subconscious part of my brain that was fascinated by Elf Quest (love how the elves in that evolutionarily diverged into wavedancers/merfolk and the gliders or flying folk) mixed in and come up with this.
Basically, a type of gargoyle that turned to stone in front of a ship to mimic a ship figurehead. They'd still be able to glide around but they would also be better swimmers and could hold their breathes for longer.
Long story short, it's dangerous to give an autistc gal who loves mythology the power of the internet and a pencil.
