When I think about Destiel vs Sastiel, what first comes to mind is Castielās assignment to raise Dean from Hell. On the spn wiki, it says that that is the only order that Castiel didnāt fail to follow, and it got me thinking. In the show, we constantly see Castiel standing/sitting close to Dean, and fighting people who try to hurt/kill him. A lot of people may see this as Cas having feelings for Dean, but I see it as: Castiel is a soldier, has been since the beginning. He was ordered to raise Dean from Hell and protect him, and even when the Apocalypse happened, he still is protective over him. I think that some part of him has internalized that order, even if he doesnāt realize it. He still has that urge to protect him, even after heās fulfilled his duty. Now with Sam, on the other hand, Castiel was not told to protect Sam, and at first it might have even seemed like he shouldnāt want to protect him, evidence being Castielās first words to him being: āSam Winchester, the boy with the demon blood.ā As well as the fact that Sam is Luciferās vessel, and the other angels see Sam as inherently evil, despite the fact that he didnāt choose to be Luciferās vessel. He didnāt choose to have demon blood in him. But yet, as Sam and Castiel interact more, they grow closer, and Castiel realizes that Sam isnāt who he thought. Heās not evil, heās just a man whose destiny was chosen before he was even born. Castiel realizes this, but he still knows that if Sam died, the Apocalypse wouldnāt come true, but he didnāt let Anna kill him. He almost walked into Holy Fire telling Lucifer that he wouldnāt let him take Sam. Castiel had no reason to protect Sam, not like why he protected Dean, yet he still chose to protect him, and get close to him. Sam was the first person Castiel tried to hug, when he realized Sam was okay. Castiel got close to Sam of his own volition. He wasnāt tasked to stay close to him, and when two people are in close proximity for a long amount of time, theyāre bound to connect. But that wasnāt the case with Sam and Castiel. Thatās why I like Sastiel better, because Castiel chose Sam, he chose to be close to Sam. I know that thereās the whole confession scene at the end of the show, but if you remember, Castiel once said something very similar to Sam ābeing human didnāt just change my view of food, it changed my view of youā he also said ānothing is worth losing youā. Again, Castiel chose Sam, even when Heaven said he was untrustworthy. Castiel defied them multiple times for Sam (evidence: Anna). Yes he also defied them for Dean, but he had orders to protect Dean, and he thought he was protecting him when he defied Heaven. There are also many times throughout the show where Sam and Castiel have respected each otherās decisions, even when they werenāt great, and helped each other fix their mistakes. Sam and Castielās relationship is healthier than Dean and Castielās, because Destiel is toxic, and Dean rarely treated Castiel fairly, he was always so quick to believe he was bad, when he did the wrong thing, even when Castiel thought he was making the right choice. I could go on and on, but my point is: Sam and Castiel chose each other, and thatās why I think their relationship is better.
