When I examine the masterful lines of Past and Present, I realize most are not based on artificial Literary Conceit, but rather are the result of directly seeking
Zhong Rong (zi Zhongwei), Shipin (Classification of Poetry) (trans. Bodman).
Upon reflection I realize how counter culture this quote relatively is. For context, at the time, a lot of poets liked to drop allusions to earlier poets and prior works.
I think of this quote whenever I do calligraphy. It’s helpful to visualize what the person is seeing as they write.
