Nick looked at him oddly. “I don’t know. Why are you asking me these things? This isn’t some sort of post-gunshot meltdown, is it, ’cause I’m not built to handle those.”Kelly began to snicker, holding his chest so it wouldn’t hurt. “I don’t know. Maybe.”“If it is, we’ll call Owen; he’s good at the meltdown stuff.” "Owen sat across the table from them, backward in one of the cheap folding chairs, and leaned his elbows on the back of it. “Have you been watching Nick?” he asked Ty. Ty scowled. “What do you mean?” Owen shrugged, pressing his lips tightly together. “He’s bent.” "“Do you remember that little village south of Kabul?” Owen asked. “I cleared a room but missed a trapdoor, guy popped out and had me in his sights.” Nick nodded, frowning. “You stepped in and got him with a knife, got him before he could get me.” Nick shivered violently, nodding again. “Do you regret that?” Owen asked. “No,” Nick answered immediately. “You don’t stay awake and mourn the life you took that day? The life of the man who was pointing his gun at me?” Nick hesitated, frowning at Owen. “No.” “You think that makes you a bad person?” “What?” Nick asked, feeling his chest tighten. “You killed that man. But you don’t regret it. Do you think that makes you a bad person?” Nick was silent, searching himself for the answer. He found himself shaking his head. “No.” “This is no different, Irish,” Owen said. “Burns had a gun to Ty’s head. You stepped in and got him before he could fire. It’s no different at all.”

Of COURSE there is a story to go with this.
Last night, I was finishing the last package from the giveaways, except that the last one wasn't a giveaway at all. I did them in the order that I received them, and over the weekend a donation for a print came in from Chrisfo. She'd already gotten her pendants from me at GRL2013. Many of you know she was my roommate there.
As I was putting the print in her package, I got to thinking. For her, that one print didn't seem like enough. You wouldn't believe the amount of things she brought to Atlanta from Germany for me to take home. Her homemade chocolates were heaven. She made me beautiful jewelry. She swore Germany's brand of Nutella was better than ours, and damn if she wasn't right. And German gingerbread? Holy shit.
I sat there and thought about how she loved my dragon art; she's reblogged it a few times. She loves dragons. Maybe I should include a couple of prints of the ones she'd reblogged, I pondered. And then, I remembered something she said to me in our hotel room. A flashback...
"I wish I had a dragon of my own."
I looked at the clock. It was a bit after 11 p.m. I had a little over twenty four hours to create a piece of art to put in her package. Mondays and Tuesdays are incredibly busy days for me. Could I do this? I looked at the clock again.
Come on, Cath. Creatures are your FORTE. And remember your mantra? Sleep is for sissies.
And when the image of the dragon I'd do for her suddenly popped into my head, that was it. I jumped up from my work table, sat down at the graphic tablet and flew.
I knew the dragon was going to read a book, because Chrisfo loves to read. But at the last minute, I remembered how much she loved me reading Shock & Awe to her over those three nights (and how much she blogged about my porn reading skills *snort*) and I knew what book it had to hold. I'll change it to another one for her avatar (I know LoTR is another favorite series of her and also suits a dragon) but for ALL our Nick and Kelly feels, and for Chrisfo and I's amazing time in Atlanta, I had to do this one first.
I hope she loves it as much as I loved making it for her. <3
