Whenever I speak to kids about my journey I talk about how I use to draw on desks in high school in Dayton. This weekend I reminded by a college friend that I use to do that in engineering classes at Georgia Tech. All classes. All of the time. Though it was no surprise to any of my friends I’m still amazed. People ask me to analyze a problem. I get to have an idea. Then I get to draw an idea. Then other very smart people help me build that idea in reality. I never take those opportunities for granted. Early in my career I was given a tour of Haasi, a very large factory in Indonesia. There was a floor the size of a football field where a choreographed team of men and women executed the construction of one small children’s shoe. Eddie, my engineer, pointed out that the shoe they were building was the shoe I was working on. “All of those people are focused on building that little drawing you drew. You make the smallest change and it affects all of them.” 35 holes. 37 holes. 3mm. 3.5mm. That’s the job.
