Back on the mat yesterday after a looooong period off.
We did Sankyo from shomen uchi the first four variations. My arms are so sore I can’t even lift up my mug for breakfast.

Closer
Taka-san tested for yonkyu tonight, with me as uke. He nailed everything, and my glasses went flying at one point. I managed to keep correct spacing and timing, getting up with immediate, committed attacks. I thought my maai (spacing) was too far out a few times when I was trying to deliver yokomen uchi strikes. Taka adapted, I guess. Amazing, though, was Taka's irimi nage. "Sit DOWN, brother" even though I'm about 20 cm taller. I guess I should remind sensei that I want to test, that my injury is in the past.
We had one visitor from north island, and one new aikidoka who just finished the beginners class sequence yesterday.
There was a whole lot of soto tenkan, including one fabulous sukashiwaza - uke attempts katate dori, nage draws uke forward with a soto tenkan, followed by kokyu ho breath throw. Done right, it's like you tripped backwards climbing up stairs - you're asking "how?". The challenge of the night? Hanmi handachi kata dori nikkyo. From a seated position, you can't really get palm of the second hand over uke's forearm, so you just hook your fingertips from inside and underneath. The tricky part is that you can't "grab" the forearm, you have to keep the thumb tucked out of the way or your fingers won't be able to reach. It's a hard habit to break.
No Surprise
I was asked to be uke for a gokyu test, which I recently passed myself. They passed, and I made nage look good doing so. Awesome!
Hitori waza
Yokomen uchi irimi nage. Bokken sabaki (suburi?). Kokyu dosa. Arau. Afterwards, hitori waza irimi nage renshu... and a mudansha joins me with shomen uchi. The next 15 minutes are loaded - complete with advanced pointers from sensei and sempai for dealing with my particular body's current capabilities. Suddenly uke is hitting the mats like he means it.
