TMR - Shoot 2 (Shoot Review)

The shoot with Vishal Vaid and co went extremely well in regard to the night and the number of shots taken throughout I was able to gain angles from both right, left and centre as well as short interviews with the accompanying musicians (Guitar and Harmonium player)

As shown below you are able to see the manner in which I’ve broken down the shots/ clips that I filmed throughout the evening as well as from this shoot but from previous days too. Creating a log form making it easier for me once I begin editing.

Shoot Review

Shoot:

For this first shoot I used a disposable camera to mimic the sort of grainy possibly underexposed or under exposed look of an image seen in Emily Rose England’s work and Dash Snow’s. The shoot I did, although shoot was spilt into two halves. The first half shot in Karens room, focusing on her alone and her belongings. The second half I was then when we attended a Christmas production at a local drag bar in Camden.

I think the images of Karen in her flat are okay but some have a sort of awkward, staged feel to them, as this was our firs shoot I hope this will break down with time, getting to know her better.

I like the aesthetic appearance of the disposable camera however, for my major project I might prefer something a little more refined, If shooting again I might consider using a film with trigger flash to achieve a better quality image.

Found Images:

I thought it best to separate the sources the images were found on just in case at a later date I want to do something with contrasting different images from different social media platforms. What I found interesting her is that her Instagram is more refined, and professional featuring less images of herself and more of the culture she engages with and editorial type images and only picture Karen in drag. Whereas the images available on her Facebook account have a looser feel of her in and out of drag, with friends, etc. I think her facebook profile gives a more well-rounded picture of who Karen is, whilst her instagram only offers the refined, professional version.

Final Shoot with 5x4:

The 5x4 shoot happened in the same setup as the digital test shoot, I just simply replaced the DSLR and the tripod for the large format tripod and the 5x4. I made slight adjustments to the 5x4 optics to position the lamp central in the frame with surrounding space to employ the emotions and atmospheres into the image. Before taking the photograph, I did the calculations for the Inverse Square Law, displayed below.

Light 2.7, light meter: f.22, 1/125th

Object = 26cm

Image = 6cm

26 ÷ 6 = 0.23 + 1 = 1.51 (half a stop)

so, aperture between f.16 and 22

I was pleased with the result of the 5x4, it appeared the same as the digital test shoot results. I believe the photograph communicates the events of the miners strike and also the mining industry through the inanimate object assisted through the atmospheres transferred from the events portrayed in the image. I am extremely proud of the final outcome of the image and can’t wait to scan the photograph on the Hasselblad on the 22nd.
