Rousseau updated by me. The horror. The horror...
I feel like one of the liminal spaces that people often forget about is the almost empty multi-storey car park or shopping arcade that is playing some echoey distant music that never gets closer no matter where you go and you can’t for the life of you find out where it’s coming from.
Shoving Day
The annual Shoving Day (aka Boxing Day) sales are nearly here.
In my part of the world people actually queue from 4am outside major centres and retailers to buy things at the sales on December 26th. The doors open at 8am and a wave of humanity, still digesting Christmas lunch, stampedes in.
The thrash through the trash begins.
All care in handling goods goes out the window. Clothes on the floor, broken decorations, packets spilling their contents and 'eyes on the prize' attitudes everywhere.
The last Shoving Day sale I went to was 10 years ago at a smaller local centre. I will never go again. What stuck with me was the number of kids who were having tantrums because their parents would not buy them things - hours after the excesses of Christmas Day. Stupid people, taking their tired kids to a mad shopping centre at that hour.
I don't even need to brave the Shoving Day sales to get Christmas items for next year. With careful unwrapping of gifts so far received, I have already got lots of cellophane, tissue paper, ribbon, bows and gift boxes ready to reuse next year.
Is simpler living and a more minimal waste lifestyle one of your plans or resolutions for 2018? Why not get a head start by rescuing as much reusable Christmas wrap and trimmings as you can this year. Needing new clothes or homewares? Wait until the end of January when the op shops start getting all the rejected and unwanted Christmas gifts being donated. Waiting a few weeks will also give you time to discover if you really needed the new thing in the first place.
If you do go to the Shoving Day sales I promise you will not see me there. Enjoy all the tired whiny kids, crowds, parking hassles, grumpy people, impulse purchases, debt and mass consumerism.
What are your minimal waste plans or resolutions for 2018?
