BHM Issa Rae - Perhaps best known for her show, Insecure, Issa Rae's career has encompassed multiple disciplines; acting, writing, production and more. Her self-produced YouTube shorts series #TheMisadventuresOfAnAwkwardBlackGirl earned her a dedicated cult audience and attention from media outlets. This author would like to note that as a certified ABD (Awkward Black Dude) I found it very relatable. With the aid actor/producer #LarryWilmore Issa's Insecure was picked up by HBO and is now in it's 5th and final season. At it's core, #InsecureHBO is about relationships and their complexities. The cast, mainly Black thirtysomethings of varying professions, personalities and backgrounds, is a far cry from the stereotypical faire television has served up to Black audiences in the not-too-distant past. It has earned numerous accolades and awards including #MTV's #ShowoftheYear, a #GoldenGlobe for Rae's acting, and several #EmmyAwards Issa has been an actress of note in several other projects including #TheHateUGive, #TheLovebirds and more. Best of 2016:

Show of the Year...

I attended more shows this past year than I had in 7 years combined, so making this choice was not as easy as previous years.

That being said, and with all due respect to Preoccupations and True Widow who put on amazing gigs, this year's Show of the Year honors go to Gold Class/Sextile live @ La Cita. 

Tremendous props go out to the Part Time Punks sound maestro who manned the boards at La Cita and captured a perfect sound throughout the night.

It's easy to say that Australia's Gold Class cast the wider net when it comes to exposure, but this being Los Angeles meant that hometown Deathrock heroes Sextile would top the bill. Two of felte record's finest would put on a helluva show, each bring their own brand of post-punk to the table. 

Gold Class:

There's no better way to start the proceedings than "The Soft Delay" with its slow build of an intro and the robo-stylings of drummer Mark Hewitt making it a visually memorable piece of music. 

For those who witnessed the four members of Gold Class (within arm’s length) rip through their set (comprised of many choice cuts from their debut LP It’s You but unfortunately no “Michael”) had to walk away feeling something. Within the first few bars of “Perverts” my night was made.

Australia’s Gold Class inspire, plain & simple.

Sextile:

Los Angeles’ own Sextile took the stage floor and closed out the night in frantic fashion. No frills, no nonsense, this is Sextile.

Rhythmically powerful and piercingly loud, Sextile are LA’s premiere Death Rock unit. Inspiring awe and uncontrollable limbs, the four-piece brought their caustic charm to those gathered and brought the night to a proper close.

If you ever get the chance to experience Sextile live, don’t hesitate.
