We Be The Herbaholics... Phi-Life Cypher
Sorry people, I know that it's been a while since my last post. I'm not gunna make excuses, I've had a lot on but it's my fault and I really should be doing this more. But anyway, thought I'd post about what's doing the rounds at the minute and no matter how long ago I had my first phase of listening to the London based Hip-Hop trio (Life MC, Si Phili & DJ Nappa) I still always find myself going back to them. These 2 "dreadnaught" MCs are literally out of this world. For me intelligent lyrics are the main thing I listen out for in Hip-Hop (don't get me wrong obviously there's much more required to make a song worthy of a Realness status) and fuck me, Phi-Life Cypher must have some of the most intelligent lyrics I have literally ever heard.
This is by no means their best or most intelligently constructed track, quite a few people have attempted the alphabet challenge, and in my opinion this is by far the best that I've heard. This alone really should convey the skill of Phi-Life Cypher.
But it really doesn't stop there, DJ Nappa produces some absolutely amazing beats for Si Phili & Life MC to selectively spill their incredible lyrics over. Personally Life MC is my favourite, but that's not meant in a derogatory way to Si Phili at all. They both have impeccable flows that they switch up freely and they can both go very fucking hard. Millenium Metaphors (the eponymous tune of their first album) is a perfect example of that. At a length of 6:41 the vast majority of MCs would need a chorus, or at least some sort of hook... But no. Not these 2. They go hard for the whole time, and every single line is gold. Have a listen, this is strongly recommended.
Even without DJ Nappa's on point production Si Phili & Life MC will murder any beat. Spitting over the instrumentals of Method Man & Busta Rhymes - What's Happening & The Gorillaz - Clint Eastwood the pair are absolutely exceptional. Nothing I write can do them any justice, you really need to just go out and cop Millenium Metaphors, Higher Forces & Playback. Playback contains some songs from their other releases but does also have new material, so I mean that's optional but Millenium Metaphors & Higher Forces are a fucking must. I'll leave you with a few tunes to mull over in your brain, make sure you don't miss out on the last track, Fingerprints of the Gods (a DJ Skitz project), it features other UK talent (which of course is all still sick) but it really comes together to form a very fucking solid entity.
