Sunsets in Sicily

Minchia / Minghia: This is the word that Sicilian people say the most. It expresses wonder, approval, joy, irritation, bother, fear, disgust, surprise and so on. I don’t know how to explain this word politely but IN SHORT it means "cock" (not penis). Nowadays the word is also popular in the rest of Italy. In fact, I was very surprised when I heard my work colleagues from Veneto and Lombardy using it.

Compa’ / Cumpa’ - ‘Mpare / ’Mbare: It means “mate” / “pal”. The form Compa’/Cumpa’ is used in the western side of Sicily whereas ‘Mpare/’Mbare is more common in the eastern side of the island, especially in Catania. 

Mizzica / Misca: It is an euphemism used to say the curse word Minchia/Minghia in a more polite way. It expresses surprise, excitement and incredulity. 

Cachì: This word is used in the area of Palermo. It means something like “Exactly”, “That’s right”, “Just like that!” The word also means “Lotus”.

Futtitinni: This is the motto of every Sicilian person. It is not just a word, it is a life style. It means to take things very easy. Not to worry and to be happy. 

Ammatula: This word means “Unnecessarily”, “Needlessly”, “For nothing”. 

Peri Peri: Here I am not talking about the amazing Peri Peri Chicken (which I love). Litterally, it means “foot foot”, and it is used to say “to go around on foot”.

Camurria: It’s a very specific nuisance. 

Pacchione /Pacchiune / Pacchiuna / Pacchiona: In the area around Palermo it means “fat” whereas in CATANIA MEANS SOMETHING TOTALLY DIFFERENT. Something like “hot girl”. So watch out... 

Ntzù: This is the sound that Sicilians make with their tongue to say “no”. It’s something like a click of the tongue. I think this is a mediterranean thing because I saw also some Greek and North African people doing the same sound.

Je ne sais plus où j’ai trouvé cette recette, peut être sur Facebook dans un groupe de cuisine où je ne poste pas grand chose mais que je lit souvent.
