I’ll Drink to That
Notes: apparently I’m writing fic now. This one’s a missing scene oneshot taking place just before the Tokyo party when Finn gets flown to Japan. It happens a couple days after my other missing scene fic, A Cold Morning.
TW: heavy themes of death

A Volkswagen Karmann Ghia has no radiator.
That’s because it’s air cooled.
He could remember that. There must have been some space in his tired mind to remember that. He repeated it in his head on the drive to the runway. It was a miserable night out. The rain just kept coming in sheets. If it was any other jet, Finn wouldn’t be sure he could fly in that weather, but it was Siddeley. He could fly in anything.
…:::.::…:::::::::..::…:..::::::..:::.:::…::::::..::..:::..::::….::…
Siddeley wasn’t waiting long before he saw headlights approaching out of the rain. He lowered the cargo ramp for them—him. Sid searched for the second pair of headlights, but they never came. His orders were to pick up Finn McMissile, but Leland was always with him; it didn’t even need to be said. If he was picking up one of them, it meant he was picking up both of them. And they were working that mission together.
Finn came closer and Sid saw his expression.
“Hello, Siddeley.” It was the quietest greeting he’d ever gotten from Finn.
Sid didn’t want to fear the worst, but the look in Finn’s eyes plus the sound of his voice confirmed it. Still, even after Finn drove up the ramp, he hesitated to close it, waiting a bit longer. But it was futile. He let his eyes close for a moment as it sank in. Then he had to carry on.
“Rotten night out, isn’t it?” Siddeley tried as he closed the ramp and started his thrusters. He didn’t get a response. “No worries, I’ll get us there,” he added. What more could he say? He could practically feel the grief radiating off of Finn in his hull.
…:…….::::.::..::….:::.:::..:….:::.::::.::..:::::…::::..::..::…
“I have no doubt that you will.” Finn’s response came late. He knew he came late, but it took that long to drag a functional sentence out of him. Still, he recognised what Siddeley meant it by. It was a veiled acknowledgment of the shadow that hung over Finn.
“Pour me a scotch, would you, Sid?” Finn had been cooped up in that shabby Alaskan motel for too many days. He could use some hard liquor in his tank. “Neat,” he added.
A mechanical arm folded out from the liquor cabinet and poured the drink. Finn downed it a little too quickly.
“Pour me another, would you?”
He could feel Sid hesitant, but he obliged nonetheless and Finn downed it just as fast.
“I’m beat. Wake me when we arrive.” Finn sank into the padded seat. The alcohol took the edge off of everything and he thought he’d actually get some good rest on the flight. Plus he wouldn’t have to speak.
“Sure thing, Finn,” came Siddeley’s reply.
Finn didn’t have any trouble dozing off, but he didn’t stay asleep long. He was in and out of sleep for a few more minutes, then he couldn’t get any more rest.
“Pour me another scotch, Sid,” Finn said after a little while. He waited but the drink never came. He knew Siddeley heard him, and he felt his patience become paper thin. “Oh come on, Sid, you know damn well why! Just pour me another bloody drink!”
Siddeley paused before saying anything.
“No, Finn. I didn’t know.” His voice was so solemn it made Finn instantly regret his outburst.
“Oh golly, Sid, I thought someone would’ve told you.” Finn felt his anger sink back down into the grief it came from. No one had told him what had happened. “I’m sorry, Sid. I’m sorry. I thought you knew.”
Siddeley weighed what he could ask. “Were you with him?” he asked hesitantly.
“I can't talk about it,” Finn said right away. “I can't think about it,” he added later. “I’ve got to get through this bloody mission, but I can’t think.” He stopped before he let too much come out. The alcohol was already getting him to let out more than he would’ve, but it was also helping him forget. “Just one more drink, Sid. Please?”
He felt the jet cave in and the mechanical arm poured another though didn’t fill it up as much as the last.
“Finn.”
Finn stopped and listened.
“Promise me something. Promise me you’ll be careful?” Siddeley asked. “He would've wanted you to be careful.”
Those words echoed from a transmission that would forever be etched into Finn’s memory.
“I’ll drink to that.”

Notes: I like to think Siddeley could be a sort of confidant for Finn. Or at least someone he trusts enough to be a little more open around. They seemed to have a good relationship in the movie and I think they would’ve talked about Leland at some point.
Also, is it just me or could Finn be maybe a little bit drunk at the Tokyo party? He shows up, suave as fuck but not a plan in sight. He immediately bails on meeting the American agent and sends this random diagnostics agent out on a whim instead. And I get he didn’t want to blow their cover but he could have called for backup. He could’ve some SOMETHING.
I know he wasn’t all there because of losing Leland so recently but my god finn.
They decided to have a walk in the park, then it started to rain… ☔️
I thought of drawing something silly and I always imagined Siddeley being the third-wheeler because I think it would be funny
