Virgil walked through the hallway of the house, humming softly as he looked at all the pictures of Patton and Logan. He smiled at seeing Patton’s smile, along with the children in the portrait, all of them having the same smile of Patton’s. He ignored Logan, not caring much for him. He kept walking and stopped as one picture caught his attention.
Patton and Logan’s wedding portrait.
It was both of them, holding hands and their rings seem to be the main focus.
Virgil stared at Logan, shaking his head and soon walked in Logan’s office. Logan was at his table, seeming to be writing down in such a speed and looking dead tired. Virgil closed the door, which seems to catch Logan’s attention now. Logan looked up and gave a small smile as he saw Virgil, getting up.
“Virgil,” Logan breathed out and walked over to him, wanting to hug him once close.
“Logan,” Virgil chuckled and placed a hand on his chest, the article in his hand, “Congratulations.”
Logan looked at Virgil in shock, watching as Virgil walked to his table and looked through his work.
“Virgil, if this is about the article, then let us talk about it,” Logan pleaded, gripping the paper.
“You really are stupid, well, you’re more of an idiot actually,” Virgil threw at him, not hiding his anger, “You have invented a new kind of stupid. A 'damage you can never undo' kind of stupid. An 'open all the cages in the zoo' kind of stupid. 'Truly, you didn't think this through?' kind of stupid,” Virgil shrugged and set down his paper, “You probably thought that nothing would happen to your reputation. That the people of beautiful America would forgive you so easily, and probably forget about whatever you might be doing, didn’t you?”
Logan noticed the sarcasm dripping from Virgil, and he walked closer to him, “Please Virgil, you’re being uncivil and if you could let me exp-”
“No, wait!” Virgil laughed, shaking his head and sitting on his desk, “I’ll summarize the matter,” He cleared his throat and explained, “You were first being accused of something, which turned into a rumor or two. Then, then, you decided to refute those rumors by sharing about an affair that no one accused you of,” He glared at Logan by now, “I, actually Patton and I, begged you to take a break and you refused to.”
“It was a busy ti-”
“No! You were so scared of what your enemies, might do while you were gone,” Virgil by now got off his desk and around the desk, “However, if you haven't realized my dear Sanders, you are your own enemy. You only lose to yourself, you yourself make everything worse for not only you but your family. Did you ever think about what would happen to them?”
“I di-”
“Of course you didn’t!” Virgil groaned, slapping his forehead slightly, “Now, even I can see that you are the world’s biggest selfish piece of shit! You know why Remy can get away with he says?” He asked, walking towards Logan, “He doesn’t dignify schoolyard taunts with a response! He actually has a brain when to be mature and know how to take react to certain situations!” He raised his voice at this point, “So yeah! Congratulations!”
“Virgil,” Logan growled slightly, watching as Virgil walked towards the door.
“You have redefined your legacy, congratulations Logan!” Virgil placed his hand on the door knob, tensing at what Logan says.
“It was an act of political sacrifice!” Logan yelled, soon tensing up himself.
“Sacrifice?” Virgil asked, turning back to look at Logan, “You don’t have an idea of what a sacrifice is,” He took a deep breath and shook his head, “I languished in a loveless marriage in Europe. My partner and I just married to keep the family pedigree going, as my father says. The only reason I lived on was to read the letters you sent,” He smiled slightly, tears developing, “I look at you and think 'God, what have we done with our lives and what did it get us?' That doesn’t wipe away the tears and years wasted,” He chuckled and walked closer to Logan and let out a shaky breath, “I’m back in the city and I’m here to stay, and you know what I’m here to do?” He asked as he leaned in.
“Virgil,” Logan whispered, staring at him, leaning in slightly.
“I am not here for you,” Virgil whispered in his ear and pulled back, walking towards his desk, glaring at Logan, “I know Patton like I know my own mind, you will never find anyone as trusting, as loving, or as kind, as he is. He is one of a kind,” He chuckled and smiled, “A million years ago at that dance he came up to me and said, ‘This one’s mine…’”
Logan gasped lowly, looking at Virgil with wide eyes, Virgil staring back at him, tears now falling.
“So I stood by, I stood by and let him be happy and marry you,” Virgil grinned, tears falling fast, “Do you know why?” He asked, gripping his shirt, staring right into Logan’s eyes, “I love Patton more than anything else in this pathetic world! I would do anything for him, even kill for him! I will always choose his happiness over mine every time!”
“Patton…” Logan whispered, tears now forming also.
“Patton is the best person we could ever have in our lives!” Virgil shouted, “He’s the person we could wish for! So never lose fact that you have been blessed with the best husband you could ever ask for!” He threw down Logan’s stack of papers, kicking them aside, “Your work will never replace him! Your work is trash next to the amazing human being he is!”
Logan was crying by now, staring at the floor and couldn’t say much out of shame and guilt. Virgil walked towards the door, stopping in front of it and looked at him once more.
“So congratulations, Logan! Remember this and never dare forget, every sacrifice you dare to make is for my brother. I know he would never leave you, so you better give him the best life,” Virgil shouted, opening the door, “Congratulations!”
Virgil slammed the door once he left, Logan standing in his pile of papers as he cried.
