I'm so glad we're on the same page about ruining everyone's lives re: SidSledge.
Do you ever think about how Sid got to meet his war buddies before any of them were in combat and is just an immediate and natural part of the group, and then compare that to Eugene's reception when he showed up as a replacement? That when Sid left by himself he probably thought he was going to be the lonely one but it ended up being the other way around?
What about whether Sid resents Eugene in some way for not being on the canal, or whether Eugene returns the favour for Sid leaving with saying goodbye or preparing him for The Horrors?
Just things I chew on because I like to get hurt.
there's something to be said about Sid and Sledge, two boys who for so damn long, shared so many things between them-- did not get to share this.
The Canal is Sid's demon. Peleliu and Okinawa are Sledge's. They do not get to share this. They can share bits and pieces of it, like familiar names and faces, but ultimately, it is not the same. Nothing like school lunches they trade under the shade of the playground trees. Or the bikes they ride to go skinny dipping at the creek.
Their nightmares used to match. Now they don't.
(Also I just realized that when Sid told Eugene's mom that Eugene was with the best men he knew, he meant his war buddies... majority of whom he didn't know, would die on Sledge!! or leave him bc they were so wounded!! oh, Sidney, was that naiveté or was that stupid hope?)
