A note on significators/signifier cards in tarot:
I may be a baby witch, but I do know this: you usually do not need to and probably should not use a significator in most situations.
Why? Well, several reasons.
Because it’s probably unnecessary. If you know who you’re reading for, and especially if the querent is present for the reading, do not use a signifier card. The deck knows who to read for. You don’t need a signifier card, it’s just redundant.
The deck may need that card. If you’re doing a reading and someone’s signifier card is the High Priestess, she can’t show up anywhere else in the spread. This creates complications if she’s needed elsewhere. She represents inner knowledge, intuition, the subconscious, hidden mysteries, and divine wisdom among other things. If your deck is trying to reveal something concerning the above, it can’t.
It can be kind of disrespectful, in a way. Many tarot readers believe that their cards have their own personality, and some include their deities in tarot reading (this is common among many forms of polytheism as well as monotheistic religions like Christianity). Using a signifier card could be considered a slight or an insult, because the deck/your deities could think that you think they’re too stupid to know who to read for. This is (obviously) very bad. Your deck could start acting out, and worst-case scenario, you could damage your relationship with your deck and even your deities.
There are scenarios in which using a significator card is just fine, or even necessary for a specific type of reading. But for 99.9% of tarot spreads, it’s best to skip the significator.

A THRID PARTY READING WITH THE LENORMAND CARDS
A THRID PARTY READING WITH THE LENORMAND CARDS
Let’s look at a recent reading with the Lenormand cards that made me think about how we can use the playing card insets in an optimal way. I’ve written about insets on other occasions, but recently I’ve had an opportunity to see how beautifully the reading flowed in and out of the cards’ symbolic representations as they were accompanied by the playing-card significations. The question fell into…

My Take on Significators
Okay, so, like a lot of modern readers... I have a lot of issues with traditional significators because gender roles and expectations and what even is the point.
So I started a system, testing on myself, that I think works pretty well. I go back and forth between calling this “Significators with Significance” and “Focuses.”
Start by fanning the cards out on the table and asking your Querent to pick one. If you’re not comfortable having them touch your cards, use a regular deck of playing cards instead and just link the association back to your deck/find the significator in your deck once they’ve made their selection.
Explain, before they choose:
This is to find a focus for your reading. Sometimes we come in with one question on our tongues but a different one in our mind or heart. This will take some of the potential surprises off in the reading itself. This is also an opportunity for the Querent to back out if they are not feeling ready, or for you to bow out of the reading if it makes you feel uncomfortable-- you can explain either of these possibilities at this time too. Tarot should feel safe for both parties.
"Just pick a card that feels right.” I usually wait until my finger itches over a card. Let the Querent take as long as they need, maybe suggest taking a deep breath and clearing their mind a little before they start.
Once the Querent has selected their card tell them what it might mean, help them forge an understanding and connection with the reading. This will also help you understand why they are here, it’s almost like a client interview spread.
Using this focus/significator, continue the reading as you normally would.
I’m having a mood about significators/signifiers

Can you explain how significator cards work? I'm so confused about them @_@
Check out @arcanemysteries‘ post about them here!
For myself, I pretty much chose my own. I didn’t know what significators were or what they were for when I did, it’s just that I was so drawn to the Queen of Cups, saw so much of myself in that card, that I chose it to represent me when I started blogging about tarot.
Now if it shows up in a reading for me, I see it as a representation of myself.. sometimes as a reminder to stay true to what I’m all about. And if it shows up in any of my friends’ readings, they assume it’s something to do with me lol Some people take their significators out of the deck on purpose to represent them, like a place holder.
Significators are not something that you *need*
What are significators in a tarot reading? A significator is a tarot card consciously chosen to represent a person. Tarot reading.
Another great article by Theresa Reed.
