Posted @withrepost • @dzalcman This is Clarita Vargas, a member of the Colville tribe who attended St. Mary’s Mission from 1968-1974. We spoke for about two hours in a little park on the Columbia River until I realized the sun had almost disappeared and I asked if we could take a brief break so I could photograph her. I set up my backdrop and she sat for me, continuing to talk the entire time, memories spilling out of her in rapid succession while I photographed her in the pauses between stories. So — this photo feels a touch misleading, not a full representation of her energy or belly laugh or wicked sense of humor — but I’m not sure a still image could do her justice. #signsofyouridentity https://www.instagram.com/angrybeargram/p/BxRPMlFFCNo/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=n8f3oizub5ns

#Repost @signsofyouridentity (@get_repost) ・・・ This is the homestead at Banka Banka, one of the earliest cattle stations to line the Stuart Highway in the Northern Territory. Aboriginal families would often come to live on cattle stations to find work, and during the era of the stolen generations, those stations were some of the first places targeted by the government officials and police officers looking for part Aboriginal children. The often unspoken subtext of how half Aboriginal children came to be born at cattle stations -- back when it was actually illegal for white men to marry Aboriginal women -- was that they were the product of nonconsensual relationships. #signsofyouridentity #pulitzercenter

#Repost @signsofyouridentity with @repostapp ・・・ Marjorie Winphil's birth certificate. Like most members of the stolen generation, her name was changed when she was taken away from her family. Sometimes it was because white Australians had a difficult time understanding Aboriginal names, but often it was explicitly meant to obfuscate a child's identity and family ties so that it would be more difficult to locate relatives later in life. Marjorie's new surname, Winphil, comes from a portmanteau of her mother's name, Winnie, and the town where she was born, Phillip Creek. #signsofyouridentity #stolengeneration

#Repost @dzalcman with @repostapp ・・・ On the right is Daniel Forrester, a Luritja/Pitjantjatjara man who was taken from his family to St. Mary's Hostel in Alice Springs from 1953-1960. His partner, Eileen, was at St. Mary's from 1956-1964. "They tried to wash my mouth out every time I spoke my language, but I guess they used the wrong kind of soap because it never worked. ... I kept my language for 24 years [while working in Queensland as a young adult]. I spoke to the trees, and the sheep, and the cattle. #Repost @signsofyouridentity with @repostapp ・・・ The Carnegie Indians baseball team, part of a large exhibit of Kiowa photographer Horace Poolaw's work currently up at the Museum of the American Indian in DC. Highly recommended -- too many of the historical images we've been exposed to of Indigenous America were taken by non-Indigenous photographers. Poolaw played with that colonial gaze, often photographing some of the more performative aspects of Native identity, but also documented intimate moments with his own family, and mostly captured beautiful images of everyday life in Oklahoma that have nothing to do with dancing or drumming or horses or teepees. @smithsoniannmai #signsofyouridentity

From combing through the U.S. Archives in Denver a couple months back -- found this old photo in a Bureau of Indian Affairs file of five young women attending a BIA boarding school (unlabeled, but likely Albuquerque Indian School). The text below reads "We're not as bad as we look."
