Tuesday, September 23: Primal Rock Rebellion, "Search for Bliss"
“Search for Bliss” flowed a bit smoother and was therefore much more in Adrian Smith’s comfort zone than the harsher textures that defined Awoken Broken. To be sure, the whole point of the Primal Rock Rebellion concept was for the guitarist to stretch and create something heavier and more aggressive, and their one album was certainly that. Smith deserved credit for trying something unexpected, and he showed just malleable his writing and playing could be as he locked in fairly seamlessly with Mikee Goodman’s dissonant bellow. That said, “Search for Bliss” worked in large part because it felt more in line with Smith’s day job, and Goodman likewise modulated his occasionally monotonous barking to something slightly more melodic.
