Seasons of the Witch: Samhain

It is that time of year again and Samhain is upon us bringing with him the colder weather. This is a very important time in the witches calendar and I am excited to share some things you can do to prepare. These things are form the 'Witchery' by Juliet Diaz if you want to do some further reading on your own.

Samhain

Also known as: All Hallows' Eve, Halloween

When: northern hemisphere October; southern hemisphere May

Celebrates: ancestors, spirits, those who have passed

Energies: death, rebirth, wisdom, essence of the night, communication, release, return

Ways To Celebrate

Honor the Dead: Honor the departed by setting up a special altar on which you place food, drink, pictures, and other items that have belonged to the departed, or that hold meaning associated with them. Some witches honor the dead by leaving offerings, such as food, outside their door for any spirits who may come by. Lighting candles and leaving them outside your door or window will invite departed loved ones into the home.

Silent Supper: The Silent Supper, or Dumb Supper, is a popular tradition around the world to celebrate Samhain. The meal honors the dead by being taken in silence, with the diners taking care to eat and drink quietly as well as refraining from speaking. It's even important to clear the dishes without making any noise. I've known Silent Suppers to include table setting, complete with food, for all those who have departed. Remember that this is a sacred dinner, so light candles and set a peaceful atmosphere for the event.

ok quick question so i know dumb/ silent suppers are a thing but i was wondering if on samhain people ever ate dinner with the dead and spoke to them while doing so???? i’m just doing some investigating in anticipation for my own samhain and all souls’ day kind of rituals. in this instance i’m planning on my “dumb supper” to probably be in a graveyard since i have no personal ancestors to be honoring

Samhain

CelAs the Samhain season approaches we have to get ready as this is the celebration of the witch we wait all year for. How lovely this year it falls on a Full Moon. I am so excited at the prospect of camping and scrying under the full moon with my sisters. I recently acquired the book ‘Witchery’ by Juliet Diaz and she outlines ways to celebrate each holiday. I’m going to outline the Samhain traditions here for you.

Ways to Celebrate

Honor the dead: honor those that have left us by setting up a special altar on which you place food, drink. pictures, and other special items that belonged to the departed. You can leave food outside your door for spirits that may stop by. Lighting candles by the front door or window will invite the departed for a visit. 

Silent Supper: The Silent Supper or Dumb Supper is a popular tradition to celebrate Samhain. The meal is taken in silence to the honor the departed loved ones. You must even gather the dishes silently as well to complete the silent meal. Remember to light candles and set a peaceful atmosphere for the event.

Samhain is associated with Halloween and as such is often celebrated from sundown on Oct 31-November 1. However some people observe Samhain on or near the Full or New Moon, or on November 6 which coincides with the astronomical midpoint between Fall Equinox and Winter Solstice [Source]

This is a dinner which is splendidly prepared to honor the dead and is observed in silence. It is also called a "Silent Supper". I found these articles informative and of course you can do your own research! Article Article
