So a bug landed on my bed earlier and I scooped it up and sent it on its way back outside. I thought it might be a stinkbug and was curious so I googled and....I was right, it was a stinkbug and it's also invasive af in my area. I feel really bad about letting it outside now but also since following this blog I've been reluctant to kill bugs. What is the proper thing to do in this situation? (Also Bing kept trying to tell me it was a bed bug the size of my thumbnail and that was a horrifying thought I had to share)
It of course depends largely on exact location and exact species.
Most areas have a wildlife or agricultural department with a website that will tell you which invasive species in the area are reportable (usually via an online form) and/or if you should destroy them when found. A good example of this is the spotted lanternfly.
In general, I would say unless you can 100% identify it yourself, just leave it alone or put it outside. Lots of people misidentify common native bugs for harmful or invasive ones.
Also, a lot of times even though it's non-native or invasive, it's already so established that killing one won't make a difference either way.
So...a lot of factors, I'm afraid, and I can't give you a straight forward answer!
