Ammonite Commission 2020
I was commissioned last year to make an ammonite in silver in the style of my work.
This commission instantly excited me, fossils and the Dorset coastline are a huge inspiration in my work.
The brief was to make a sculptural piece in silver based on the spiral form and using the suture lines on ammonite fossils as inspiration for the surface texture.
Using a combination of etching, oxidising and gold-plating.
The size was to be approximately 3 inches by 5 inches, not including any stand or base.
I started the commission by sketching ideas and making test pieces in copper. As the ideas developed, I was ready to show my client some drawings and photographs of the test pieces.
The design chosen was the beginnings of an idea which needed some more exploration in copper, this developed nicely into the final design to be made in silver.
The piece was made using one sheet of silver, cut and folded then soldered and formed. The piece has been etched twice; the fractal suture lines first then the graduated shapes for the gold-plated highlights.
After hallmarking and gold-plating the piece was oxidised and waxed ready to be mounted on the slate base.
This commission has been a pleasure to make I loved designing and creating the piece and I am incredibly happy with the result.
