Kai laid motionless as he was transported to one of the hospital beds, save for the subtle rise and fall of his chest as his mind drifted in unconsciousness. Half his face was covered in scarring, where the black serum had almost consumed him.

His hand twitched at the side of his bed, looking for something to hold.

Damien was in the bed next to Kai's. That's why Oriae was there.

At least, that's what she told herself.

But when Kai's hand twitched, she threw out any attempts to delude herself and held his hand tightly. She knew, deluded or not, that Kai was her friend. Maybe her ONLY friend. And if she had been a little quicker then maybe...

No. No time for that.

She thinks back to the blueprints she made for a death ray.

That guy. What did Damien call him... Twinkie?

Maybe he deserved a lazer to the face. As a treat.

For now, though, she'd wait by the side of the two people she failed, and hope they forgive her when they woke up

The roof was cold, after dark.

Oriae knew this, and yet she returned here time and time again. Sometimes Kai joined her and brought her candied apples. Other times, she sat alone and pondered.

She doesn't know why the agency keeps her around, considering her crimes. Arson, death traps, kidnapping Agents...

Murder.

...her brother still hasn't forgiven her. Won't even talk to her, even. He doesn't even go by his old name anymore, and he doesn't realize that disconnect from the sweet boy she knew hurts worse than words can say.

Does he really hate himself that much?

And how much of that is my fault-

No. She'll stop there. She's had this mental spiral a million times over after defecting, and it won't do any more good now than it does any other time.

She breathes. It's quiet.

She hears footsteps that echo in her recollection like a ghost.

It startles her, and she whips around in shock; nowadays you never hear Agent Phoenix unless he WANTS you to know he's there.

And yet, there he stands.

But he isn't wearing his mask. No, he stood there with just his usual outfit and hat.

Dami- er, herman- No...Nix? Phoenix. Phoenix, what are you doing here?

Looking at him now, his eyes are tired; emerald green dulled by whatever weighs on his mind this late at night.

It's probably how many times you've hurt him-

Needed to talk to you. He signs. That's it.

Wha- huh!? Are you daft?! Me?!

She cringes at her own instinctive aggression, and tries again.

I don't understand.

"Why now?" Goes unspoken, laying in the space between them like a fresh corpse.

Closure. Is his answer before he, too, winces and tries again, hands and fingers moving slow for her to read.

Forgiveness, maybe.

Maybe? She tries.

You've changed. He replies.

He joins her at the edge, sitting next to her like they're 10 again and hoping her dad doesn't find out about sneaking onto the roof to watch the stars.

She rubs the area around her heart subtly. Gently.

We both have.

He sighs and takes her hand. The mechanical one. It's as much an olive branch as he can offer right now, while the wounds are still raw.

Missed you. The real you. His voice croaks, like it's healing. Oriae.

She offers one, small, smile.

It's good to be back, Damien.

And they sit.
