Plant leaves that repel mosquitoes release a more effective repellant after being crushed up by felines
For even the most aloof cats, just a few leaves of catnip can trigger excited fits of chewing, kicking and rolling around.
Silver vine—or matatabi in Japanese—inspires a similar plant-induced euphoria in our feline friends. The response certainly looks like fun, but until recently, scientists were unsure if the cats’ behavior might actually have other benefits than pure pleasure.
New research, published this week in iScience, suggests that when cats play with (and damage) either catnip or silver vine, the plants’ leaves actually emit higher levels of chemical compounds that do have a benefit: repelling mosquitoes. Both plants can act as a sort of natural bug spray, and when cats chew up the leaves, that bug spray becomes even more effective. Researchers at the University of Iwate in Japan, who have been investigating cats’ interactions with catnip and silver vine for several years, were behind the research.

posting these two finally :) been wanting to make more of bones' creature specie lookin' things, and i came up with these two! they still have the little arm thingys, see holes, they just might not use them as much maybe. these two got longer tails cuz i wanted them to and more wolfish faces thanks to having faces at all. they live in packs, or maybe herds? with a leader, a medic, maybe a second in command and a couple of pup caretakers or something. yada yada. i like them a whole lot :)

We recently discovered our cat loves silver vine sticks, but we grew concerned that it may be dangerous for him to swallow pieces of the sticks as he chews on them. Various sites (invariably selling the sticks) say it's guaranteed safe no matter what, and our vet just said that literally any toy that has parts that could be swallowed is a no-go (which seems like common sense). Is silver vine some kind of magic stick that cats can safely digest or is capitalism lying to us?

Silver vine is very safe for cats as a plant. In general, however, cats really shouldn’t swallow sticks. Is it going to hurt them? It’s possible. Are injuries from eating sticks terribly common in cats though? Not really. (definitely a lot less often than dogs...) Possible consequences include injury to the soft tissues in the esophagus or stomach from scraping on the way down, getting stuck and causing obstruction or abrasions to the intestinal lining, etc. These chances are lowered by the fact that the sticks are made of natural material that is technically digestible (although less digestible in carnivorous species...) so it becomes softer and easier to pass as the amount of time spent in the GI tract increases. However, if your cat is prone to eating the silver vine sticks, it might be advisable to stick to the leaves and/or the powder form of the plant rather than risk eating sticks.
