Haunt Me: Drabble Request for silverhaired-snake
This was the hardest. Still, it had to be done; it would be closure to a chapter of her life that had never truly been able to close…till now. A little part of her had never wanted to return to the city in which he took his last breath. Even now, after everything anytime she saw that looming skyscraper whose shattered concrete had been his place in final comfort her heart skipped a beat. At least, today, she wouldn’t have to wonder into that part of the city.
He’d never see her. Perhaps, in a sense of déjà vu he’d feel something. He’d glance around but find no one there, silence where conversation should be. How quickly time moved for those living, or how slowly it dragged on for those who were tormented with the loss of a loved one. Clouded blue hues lingered on a door. She had never been one to creep, to watch over, that had always been his job. He had always been the one around the corner when you least expected it. He would be there without sound or warning when you turned around. He was always there when you needed him, and now he wasn’t there but she was. She had taken over the job of protecting, of watching and lingering in the shadows.
The door opened as a bell chimed. The school day was over and teenagers poured out of the high school. No one saw her. Finally, near the end of the flow of students, silver hair caught her eye and her heart stopped. He looked so…identical. Silver hair, a thin skeletal form, a wicked smile, this was her Gin…but at the same time not him. This is where they ended up when they finally moved on. This was the life after death, true death. A smile tugged at her lips as he raised his head, walking towards her. She almost felt for a moment that he did see her; he would reach out and touch her cheek or say her name. And as quickly as her heart fluttered at the idea, the cold realization that she was nothing but a memory hit her. He passed by her without as much as a word.
“Gin…” She whispered. “I’m glad you’re alright.”
She went to take a step, to depart when he turned, as if hearing his name distantly. Eyes parted to reveal those icy blue hues that she had so longed to gaze upon once more. She turned, stopped and froze as the reserved smile that he had only ever shared with her graced the lips of this human boy.
It was then she knew. They would meet again but until that day…she’d only be a ghost. A whisper in the wind.
