Allan Dwan - Silver Lode (1954) . So... a bad US Marshall creates a sense of paranoia in his persecution of innocent people in a small town, the name of that Marshall is McCarthy... maybe there is some kind of political message here, if only it were more obvious I might get it! Yeah, obviously an anti-McCarthy film which takes its inspiration from High Noon and makes it much more explicitly political. The main idea behind this is that you shouldn't believe people just because they are in a position of authority, even against your own instincts. The McCarthy of this film isn't really a Marshall as you eventually find out, but the way in which people react to him because he has a piece of paper giving him authority, turning on their neighbors and loved ones, ends up being a great metaphor for what was happening with HUAC at the time. This makes the film particularly brave. Unfortunately it is quite a derivative piece, the High Noon parallels, particularly at the beginning, border on plagiarism and some of the actings isn't great here. The props, cinematography and wardrobe are also nothing to write home about, you can see perfectly that this is a film from 1954, the suits look more 1950 than 1860, but oh well. Still a good example of how parts of Hollywood were fighting back against the prevalent political discourse in the States.
