We just had to put Simbrah down. She took a turn today and we got into one of the vets. He did some blood work and her kidneys were gone. Like off the charts failing. She went peacefully while I sang her favorite song. I Can't Help Falling in Love With You.
I'm going to miss my girl so much. I can't believe she's gone. But she lived a good life. And quite a long one. She would have been 14 in February.
Pet illness under the cut. Nothing graphic but kind of a heavy topic. I'm not looking for vet advice or judgement. I'm just sharing what's happening in my household presently
So back in August when Simbrah had her ear surgery the vet told me she's pre kidney failure and that I needed to go with a low-protein diet for her.
So I switched her food and started monitoring what she was eating and she moved over to eating that new food well enough.
But she started losing weight and recently started throwing up bile. In the last couple of weeks she's just flat-out refused her kibble and will only eat pieces of chicken. She is honestly so skinny right now because I can't get her to eat anything.
And doing some research (I know doctor Google isn't always the best but I have no job so no money to get her to a vet) it looks like basically the low-protein diet isn't giving her enough nutrients to get through the day. And she was throwing up bile because her stomach was too empty and it made her nauseous.
I tried giving her more meals a day but she was completely refusing to even look at the kibble. She'd lick up like, a piece or two.
I tried adding things to it to spice up her meal, but she was just refusing to eat and honestly she started fading.
So I went to the store and got her old kibble and suddenly she just lit up and started eating like she used to.
So I guess we're just going to go back to the old kibble. Because this is the face of a dog who finally got some good damn food and is comfortable and happy for the first time in weeks
As for the vet recommended diet, Simbrah is nearly 14 years old. That's like 90. How much longer would she really have on the low protein diet if she was eating it? At this point I know she's not going to have much longer. I'd be shocked if she made it to 2024. I'd rather she be comfortable and happy and eating food and not puking three times a day than maybe extend her life a couple months.
If she continues puking and refusing food then it's something deeper but I really think this is the problem.
Ugh sometimes I think I'm maybe on my way to being okay (which honestly is super fast I know but idk most of today I've felt normal. Or maybe I'm just numb) and then something will happen and I just fall apart.
For example I just went into my office and I turned around to say "you don't need to come with. Just stay. I'll be right back" and then I remembered Simbrah wasn't there. That she never would be again. I don't have anyone following me around anymore, and it's just me downstairs.
Or I posted in a Facebook group for my county to see if someone wanted her brand new bag of dog food that I got the day before she passed. And I was fine until people started saying "sure I could use it" and suddenly I just like shut down over the idea of giving away the box of food. Specifically the broken, beat up storage container that it's in. The one I've been wanting to replace for years. Suddenly parting with it is impossible, because it was hers.
God forbid I start going through her toys to donate to the shelter. I guess I'm not ready to face it all like I thought I was.
