Visuals | Editorial

For my editorial piece I am also going to design three geometric patterns to be the main illustrations throughout my piece. I will have them sitting the right hand page of each of the three spreads and will have considered the fluidity and progression in the designs to create a good pace to my work. This said I will use different shapes which can allow me to create pace whether it be in detail of each design or size of each design.

The pattern I create will be sitting on one of the three background visuals I have create and contain no colour. I want the illustration to be clean and similar to the art seen in Islamic pattern work. I have taken much inspiration from these styles and am no focusing on creating a contemporary version of this. 

Finally I have considered the way the reader will view my editorial piece and have constructed a basic idea for the layout or way the illustrations I create should sit on each page.

Backgrounds | Editorial

For my editorial piece I am creating background visuals as well as the final visuals which will sit above. There are two reasons for me deciding to create these and they are, decoration/aesthetics and to continue to promote the influence of Islamic art in my project.

My idea for the background visuals is to create three separate geometric patterns and then to have them sit on a double page spread each. I will have to consider the subtlety of the patterns as I do not want them to pull any attention away from my three final visuals. I should be able to achieve this very simply using different opacity levels.

Blueprint Process

Blueprints were introduced in the 19th Century and allowed rapid and accurate reproduction of documents used in construction and industry. Typically blueprints are used in architectural or engineering design. The blueprint process was characterised by light coloured lines on a blue background, a negative of the original, similar to an inversion. The process was unable to reproduce colour or shades of grey.

Why Blueprints?

I am taking a quick look into blueprints because of Simon Esterson history of working for Blueprint magazine and also because of the link I find between blueprints and Estersons design process. I am nearing the end of the design process of my three double page spreads and am at the stage of tweaking certain design elements to look more aesthetically appealing and convey my meaning and topic as fully as I can. I think that the background geometric patterns that sit on each spread would look good in a light shade of blue. I have not as yet included any colour in my work and this is because I want it to have a dry, minimal feel. I think the use of colour may distract from the tone and mood of my work.

The Final Idea

Today I have been able to create the final concept for my editorial piece on Simon Esterson. After many tutorials and some confusion with the basis for my original ideas I have arrived at a level of confidence in my current idea. I am going to focus on the use of 'geometric patterns' as my grid structure. Now I use the term 'geometric' very loosely because that is how it will be in my design. I arrived at the idea from studying Islamic decorative art but in the contemporary form. I have been lucky enough to find visuals for the way these decorative forms are produced and these visuals are what I plan to use to create a mathematical grid system. This links to Simon Estersons designing style and general ethos.

Piers Jackson is a fine artist who creates geometric three-dimensional works with almost a sculpted feel. I still like the idea of the possible connection between Simon Estersons way of life/ personality and geometric art. I have found that this is an abstract suggestion of mine and that I need to define a stronger link between Esterson and visuals for y editorial piece.
