Paultin manages to get a rather large haul from one of his gigs, and after contributing to the rent for a while, he uses the rest of the money to spoil Simon. He gets his son more clothes, he buys toys (that Simon can share with the other kids), and then he gets two special gifts; one that Simon should try to keep private for a while, and one truly heartwarming. 

The private gift is blowdart gun and a bunch of darts, the same as the ones Simon used to have when he was a puppet. This one he hands over and makes Simon promise to follow the same rules as always - don’t use it on anyone in the house, and only use it on people outside of the house if they’ve proven themselves to be a threat.

The heartwarming gift, on the other hand, Simon doesn’t understand at first. It’s a pile of wood, some carving knives, and the strings that he’s seen Paultin use for his lute. And then Simon finds himself crying when Paultin explains that one of the good things he remembers from his childhood was making his first lute wit his father, and if Simon wanted to they could continue the tradition and make Simon’s first lute together.

But seriously, one day Paultin looks around at the kids and realizes that they’re all wearing the same clothes that they came to the house with, and after a moment of contemplation he goes into his savings, takes out some money, and then goes to the kids and tells them that they’re getting new clothes.

And what comes next is a disaster. Paultin comes home, disheveled and tired, and tells one of the others that next time it’s their turn to take the kids shopping because gods above, trying to corral all of them - especially with Simon and Squiddly fighting and Nat trying to act like she’s above getting new things but clearly wanting stuff and Jenx just plain too nervous to speak up - is a nightmare and he’s good for the next decade.

(Jokes on him though, he ends up being the designated supervisor for any shopping trip for the children)

So, Simon 1.0 got his soul when he defied Paultin’s orders in order to save him, right? But then, when did Simon 2.0 get his soul? Because I imagine no one would have been able to polymorph him into a real boy if he didn’t have a soul. Was it the fifty years in Barovia? If he had some small inkling of emotions for Paultin before, you know, and then he spent fifty years with Strix just nurturing those emotions, would that grow a construct a soul?

I keep picturing Paultin taking Simon and Squiddly out and teaching them how to fire the gun safely. Squiddly because he's clearly interested, and Simon because I can see him getting upset if one of the other kids took up Paultin's time.

In that vein, also Paultin teaching the boys how to play various instruments and including Jenx and Nat if they want to.

... Paultin turns the Eggo Crew into a band of bards.
