Simon Shaheen And Ali Jihad Racy - Maqam Kurd
Taqasim Improvisation in Arabic Music (1991)
The Turkish ney master with Simon Shaheen (oud & violin), Arto Tunçboyacıyan, Aïyb Dieng, Jah Wobble, Jonas Hellborg, Bill Laswell, Nicky Skopelitis and Ginger Baker.
An intensive Arabic String Re(al)treat in the Shaheen mansion in Coopersburg, PA... Simon Shaheen is our guru. Such a lovely group of people...in a concentrated environment. Daily routine : get up, eat breakfast, group lesson until lunch. More group lessons until dinner. Eat dinner. Reconvene for group lessons until bedtime. Simon Shaheen is a perfect guru. He is calm, attentive, strict, but kind. We tackled modes (maqamat), modulations, improvisations (taqasim)...while covering a huge repertoire of new pieces. Learning by ear is still a big challenge for me, but it is important to be kind to oneself and allow for slow improvement... Delicious Arabian meals were cooked by the wonderfully talented brother, Najib Shaheen, who plays and makes ouds. He is a force and character to be reckoned with! He swears, shocks, flirts, confronts and charms, in equal measure. He is an utter delight! This was the first retreat that the Shaheens have run in their home...and we are hoping for more retreats of this kind in the future!
