"So, you said Simon came from a... Blood ocean?" Lain shifted their body in the chair and brought their gaze to Grace, who laughed softly at how blunt they put it.
Grace nods as Simon stares at Lain. "That's right, uh, why do you ask?"
Lain shifted their gaze to Simon, who narrowed his eyes in response, waiting for a distasteful joke, something stupid to be said, anything to give him an excuse to let out his anger. Instead, Lain smiled.
"Did you see the underworld?" Lain crossed their arms, Simons face turned confused.
"... What?" Simon was baffled at the question, not in a show of anger, just genuinely caught off guard. Grace was also a little surprised. "I saw hell itself down there if that's what your asking. I saw-"
Lain smiled. "No. Not what I meant. In old Greek mythology, it was said the god of the sea, Poseidon, was once a cathonic god. A god who ruled the underworld and still held the title of sea god. My mother and I used to theorize that since the sea itself was so deep and uncharted, that they believed it lead to the underworld." Lain sighed softly as they stood. "Just a dumb joke and dumb memories."
Grace lit up at the explanation while Simon tilted his head. "You must know a lot of mythology, huh? Sayyyy... If we were Greek gods, who'd we be, hm?" Grace said it playfully.
Lain thought for a moment. "You'd be Iris, the goddess of the rainbow, while Simon would be Ares or Artemis... Rocky would definitely be Hermes!"
"and... You?" Simon gestured to Lain, wanting an explanation of theirs too.
"... Eh?" Lain was confused and tried to bullshit a god that they felt a pull towards that wasn't an obvious answer, Kronos. "I don't know... What- what do you all think?"
Grace spoke first. "Aphrodite!"
Simon was next. "I dunno. Circe."
"But she wasn't a god... Right?" Grace questioned.
"I dunno! She was the first thing that came to my mind! Wasn't she like... A witch? And I also thought of Scylla too but she was a nymph." Simon explained.
"Nymphs are minor goddesses though!" Grace smiled, Simon looked close to punching him.
"Scylla?" Lain spoke, intrigued. "She was a man eating monster... Yet she was one of Circes nymphs. There are three stories that explain her, that Circe cursed her over a man, she was a mortal woman cursed, and the wife of Poseidon cursed her..."
"Huh. A lot of cursing going on with her... Which, makes sense, in a fucked up way." Simon sighed to which Lain nodded. "We've heard that weird prediction from that psychic, we've heard the audio logs Lain left, and we know they've been in immense pain ever since boarding."
"But we won't let that happen. Rocky and I saved the stars, the stars died for Simon, and Lain- ..." Silence falls over the room.
Lain sighed. "I devour the stars like they're nothing more than candy. Maybe- maybe what Simon saw... Maybe that 'light' was..."
Grace stood up and walked over to Lain, placing his hands on their shoulders. "No. We will find a way to keep you with us. To save the stars, to give Simon his best life and to save you from fate. We saved the stars, there's- there has to be a way!"
Simon was silent and so was Lain, they both didn't know what to say. Lain nodded, it was a stupid and hopeful wish to defy fate itself, especially when everything was connected. Lain would've devoured the stars in her time, in 2030, Grace would've been sent out years later, and Simon was the end product... Yet they were all here together, on the Hail Mary.
What stupid wishes I once had.
