and ooh was not expecting a question like this. off the top of my head, there’s a passage in jean rhys’ unfinished autobiograhy smile please! (1979) that had me sobbing hysterically when i read it last december. it reads:
“I would never really belong anywhere, and I knew it, and all my life would be the same, trying to belong, and failing. Always something would go wrong. I am a stranger and I always will be, and after all I didn't really care. I hated the mountains and the hills, the rivers and the rain.”
i feel this so deeply as an immigrant/diaspora. i’ve never really gotten over the culture shock of moving to the west but i’ve also been so distanced from the countries i was ‘supposed’ to call home that i can’t fathom living in these cultures either. even now as i’m not far off from graduating uni i still don’t know where i want to live, i just feel this need to get away and find a place where i’ll magically feel like home, but there truly isn’t one.
