This is my very first time saw volcanic eruption directly in quite close distance. Approximately the radius to the volcano is 5 km. This volcano, Sinabung mountain, has been actively erupting for almost seven years. According to baseline survey conducted by Puskris UI last November, many impacts occur for seven years: evacuation, livelihood loss, feel stress and worry, property damage, death. As people who live around the volcano are farmers, majority of them shift their crops to more resilient plant against volcanic ash, such as coffee and shallot. Of course the shifting require trial and error which is exhausting for them. It was found too, despite of the prolonged disaster, people who live in the medium level of potential hazard are still not well equipped with knowledge and capacity to respond disaster, ironically. It because main focus of government and stakeholders is survivors who was relocated and refugees in camps. Those people who also affected and prone to the disaster are forgotten. Puskris UI will implement disaster risk reduction and psychosocial support programme to those community and form village volunteers in four villages. But to empower community, Puskris UI cannot stand alone. Puskris UI needs government, NGO, community based organization, faith-based organization, other stakeholders and the community itself to work together. Hopefully, it also leads to the public awareness that such category of people need attention as well. .
